Usability is Everything (by Default)...So Says Jakob

This page shows exactly why search engine marketing is amazing:

Search engine users click the [search] results listings' top entry much more often than can be explained by relevancy ratings. Once again, people tend to stick to the defaults.

You can always tell a topical guru when they extend their typical testing or scope of information to include ideas which would typically be considered to be part of another field.

Many people describe the world with search being at the center of everything, others think you need to be able to Use It, while some explain the world through a deck of texas holdem playing cards <-- [link for sale, inquire within]. What lense do you see the world through? :)

Those are interesting ponts, Aaron -- both the topical guru extending into other spheres and the tendency to see things through one's specialty.

Luckily, I don't know that many topical folk either say or, hopefully, believe that their sphere is all that counts. At least, I would *hope* that they proceed from the standpoint that they are covering an aspect of a larger picture -- and I would hope that their followers understand that. In some spheres, it's much easier to grasp that concept without its being said: accessibility, for one, already dictates that there's a website to improve.

Unfortunately, at this late date, I still encounter numbers of people whose web designers have told them that, to get good search engine rankings, they'll just do something unspecified with "the meta tags". And others whose web designers didn't mention it at all.
