"They knew they were being lied to, but if lies were consistent enough they defined themselves as a credible alternative to the truth. Emotion ruled almost everything, and lies were driven by emotions that were familiar and supportive, while the truth came with hard edges that cut and bruised. They preferred lies and mood music...." - J G Ballard, Kingdom Come

You seem to be pretty big on this whole 'SEO isnt any less unethical than other forms of marketing' thing. And sadly, I have to agree, as the same thought crosses my mind everytime I turn on the TV and I see a new tv show about 'how tsunamis work' or movies like 'the killer wave'. TV companies are making a living by exploiting the tragedy, that left thousands of people and kids without their family and parents..they see an opportunity and cash in on it by making tv shows and movies about it. Ive yet to hear anyone say that is unethical.

(I don't need to mention how cold-blooded it is to use the 2nd world war as a plot for ego shooters, do I? But I guess society can accept it, because it's been a while...).

Anytime people are led astray to such a degree that they feel their information is corrupt, they seek information elsewhere. Personalized search and the AdWords quality score variable are signals that things are becoming a bit opaque in the world of search.

With the emergence of social tagging and the fragmentation of media with blogs, podcasts and RSS feeds, the mechanism for information distribution will remain fairly democratic and less than susceptible to manipulation.
