Very useful tool Aaron, I will recommend it to be featured in Google Blogoscoped but why don't you support international Google and Yahoo? Isn't it technically just the same only with a different tld?

July 12, 2006 - 4:52am

It is working now after I downloaded the latest version.

July 5, 2006 - 10:15am

Very interesting extension. I am starting to use it, but as I generally display 100 search results, I need to be cautious with it.
One nitpick I have is that the commands showing the links for the page and domain (link: and linkdomain: in Yahoo) include internal links. It would be more relevant to show only external links by using commands such as linkdomain:domain.tld -domain:domain.tld.

July 5, 2006 - 10:25am

Thanks Aaron, works fine for me.

July 5, 2006 - 10:40am

I would gladly donate money to see 3 features added:

1. Caching
2. Ability to add a long list of proxies from a predefined site, or text file, and then check those to see if they are working and truely anonymous
3. Export results to CSV feature.

The biggest limiter at this point is programming cycles available from my programmer. He goes to college and works full time in the summer. I keep trying to get him to drop out of school, but he has too many cool cute girls who work with him doing web design and programming, ie: his job is to do what he does best around a bunch of smart and cute college girls who flirt with him all day.

Money is not really his main motivator and I have plenty of it to offer him.

Shanghai

I am not sure if I am going to be able to figure that one out :( language is a big part of that...and it might be a bit to figure out how to do the proxy stuff and smoothly integrate it.

1 - Be able to re-arrange the order of the listings by one of the information points, i.e. sort by PR, age etc..

If I were to do that most likely it would have csv output where you could manipulate the data inside the csv file.

I have a problem with Yahoo!. It showing me 999 error:

Yahoo! blocked you. I think they normally do that for like a half hour or so if you query too quickly.

A few options:

  • query fewer of the Yahoo! data points
  • increase the query delay on Yahoo! data
  • set some or all of the Yahoo! data points to On-Demand
  • grab less results per SERP (ie: 10 instead of 100)

Archive.org

I will take a look into this. It may be because their server load increased a lot from 1,000's of people using this extension.

why don't you support international Google and Yahoo?

Why not try to build a stable core before expanding it? Also the page footprints are different in different countries and languages. The complexity of the software goes up quite a bit though by internationalizing the tool. I wanted to do that, but the developer wanted to get something out to get good feedback and improve what was there before even thinking about expanding this software any further.

BTW, he just did another update of it about an hour ago to make it more reliable.

Very good job !!

Can you please add google.fr ??
Thanks for this tool

July 5, 2006 - 12:10pm

yep, internationalization would be a great value add. but overall it looked like a great research tool. i'll install it right away...

January 20, 2007 - 6:28am

been using this extension in firefox sometimes I am having problem the stats are not showing but when you refresh the browser it is working but at random the 8-10th entry on the search are not showing PR on links. Also is it possible to have like this in flock browser? great tool thanks.

July 5, 2006 - 12:12pm

Hi Aaron

Excellent tool ! It's a good way to display info. But it's possible adding google.fr and yahoo.fr or others international google domains ?
Thanks a lot

Good job

Thanks very much for your great tool!

It's very amazing...how can it works.

July 5, 2006 - 1:12pm

I disabled Customize Google and now it works fine on Google.com. It doesn't work yet on international versions of Google. But this is a GREAT tool and I'm sure we'll see these issues covered in future versions. Thanks a lot, Aaron!

Hi Aaron, Thanks for this great tool. I really found it useful.

I am having a problem, why it dont show the PR, Age and things in Yahoo Search? I only see these things in Google.

Can you please help me out? I am using the lastest version of FF and SEO Toolbar

July 5, 2006 - 1:38pm

July 5, 2006 - 1:39pm

google.fr ?!

January 21, 2007 - 1:07am

I love this extension, but have a suggestion. It would be nice if there was an option to have any links to one of your domains highlighted like you can with the nofollow links. It would be so nice because you would be able to easily spot them when searching for your listings on Google or other web pages that link to your site. However, the option shouldn't highlight the links to a site on any page within the actual website. I hope this makes sense.

Seems to be a good tool for me.
I'll use it when it works for google.fr

Is it possible to store and compare with historical data?

David
July 5, 2006 - 1:50pm

Hello,
Haven't took the time to read the rest of the comments, but it only seems to work for google.com but not for country specific Google sites. I'm almost always using *.ro and I'd appreciate it if this little inconvenience will be fixed in the next version.

Other than this, it's a brilliant extension.

Hello,

I have installed this extension and it sounds great. I can confirm its active on my firefox as I can see the colored button on the bottom right of my screen. I've restarted my computer and do not have any listed conflicting extensions. It still does nothing on either G or Yahoo.

Please help!

October 12, 2006 - 3:09pm

Hi.

GREAT!!!! tool. I'm with one of the commenters above: Position numbers would be good, because I view 100 results at a time, and occasionally, if my pages come in the top 100, I'd love to see what number (call me lazy for not counting 1 by 1).

Thanks again for this tool...

March 6, 2007 - 8:20pm

There is a page linked from wikipedia, but this extension shows me wikipedia: 0
because it search only en.wikipedia.org
It would be great to let it search on all.wikipedia.org or just let users set the wiki which are interested in..
Because I need more than en wiki :)

thanks for a great plugin

July 5, 2006 - 2:30pm

I am going to try this as soon as I'm finished with that comment.

I have however read in previous posts that it does not work on country specific versions of Google.

I use google.fr more than google.com.

It would be great it you could extend the functions to the local versions of google ;)

thanks for your work.

This is one of the most useful extensions that I have used for FF. Thanks Aaron.

November 20, 2006 - 7:30am

I didn't want to put historical data in the tool. I am not collecting data and do not want to make the tool more complex than it needs to be to do its job.

Free tools like URL Trends and the Digital Point Keyword Suggestion Tool collect and display free historical data.

July 5, 2006 - 3:23pm

Also it is not working if you use one of the Grease Monkey script named Google Counter !

Nice work Aaron

July 5, 2006 - 3:26pm

great plugin!

July 5, 2006 - 3:27pm

Aaron, GREAT tool. How about this ....... showing how this particular site ranks on Yahoo and MSN ???

I'll drop a link to this post on my blog now.

July 5, 2006 - 3:42pm

hmm Only the PR is showing, the other data isn't loading in Google..

July 5, 2006 - 3:57pm

A restart fixed my display issues as well, love the shortcuts under the search field.

Hi,

This tool doesn't work. I had searchstatus deinstalled it but nothing. Read the manual and did what it said but still nothing to see.

Though i have an googlesearchfield and i can't get it removed.

Could that be the problem? I am very curious how SEO for Firefox works

Please help and mail to eurlings@tiscali.nl if possible

# PROBLEM WITH EXTENSION #

When you do a search at yahoo.com, yahoo takes you to search.yahoo.com and the SEO extension display correctly the results. But on the following search's you start at search.yahoo.com and the SEO extension do not display any information after running a search query.

I have the latest version installed.

Nice tool nevertheless! ;-)

January 30, 2007 - 5:44pm

This is a very helpful extension! Though I did encounter some problems after updating and using it.after searching on google, a popup shows stating "url.replace is not a function". i noticed it only occurred when the extension was enabled.

Silviu Duma
July 5, 2006 - 3:57pm

Best SEO extension I ever had!

I would love to use it on any page I want to see the quality of links on that page.
Eg: instead of appending to google's code "p class=g" it would append to any "a href" tag?

Or do you think it can be modified to have a list of sites defined by user?

Currently I'm running a greasemonkey script that do that but only for Page Rank and Alexa.

July 5, 2006 - 3:58pm

It won't take long before people get their IP banned from Google. This tool is just too aggressive Aaron.

July 18, 2007 - 4:33pm

The "Supplemental" feature of your plugin does not work anymore..

With any site I tried, it lists 100% of pages in the supplemental index.

Can you confirm this?

Thanks!

Hi its a great tool, Thanks
but i think it's has a problem now with the yahoo links. yahoo is giving now the results from "yahoo explore site" the tool can't read the No. from there.

July 5, 2006 - 4:01pm

I agree with it. When you use this tool, you ask too many things and on the long term, it is dangerous because Google could ban your IP adress... However main features of this tool are interesting ;)

Hey Aaron, I visited this site many times, read many articles. But its first time I am posting comments.

Please do reply me, I will be checking this out daily. untill i see your reply :)

First of all i would like to thank you for such a great utility, I am new to SEO and this tool helps me alot.
Thanks again :)

I have a suggestion, Would you please like to add link to this tool
http://tools.seobook.com/competition-finder/index.php

along with other links under search box, saying "Competetion"

I will be really thankful for it :)

Best Regards and Good Luck.

July 5, 2006 - 4:15pm

The point is to use it wisely, put a 3-5 seconds delay and query only the data you are really interested in.

July 18, 2007 - 7:36pm

Unfortunately Google disabled it

Michael Thomas
July 5, 2006 - 4:30pm

The tool is NOT too aggressive. Especially not with google. You can query pagerank with a zero second delay all day long. It's yahoo, technorati, and archive you need to be careful with. And that's why you can specify a different time delay between queries for each service.

If you get yourself banned from google with this tool, you have no one to blame but yourself.

Vicky!
November 20, 2006 - 5:22pm

Aaon, did you tested this tool with www.yahoo.com?

When i search for something, all the things like PR, Age, dmoz etc. showed up .. but they are not giving correct data. I mean they all are giving same values .. when try to find the URL they are pointing to, i come to know its some sub-domain of yahoo.com ..

I can post screenshot, Can you kindly look into the matter?

July 5, 2006 - 4:55pm

Ok, Aaron I eventually got it to work. I am now running it on google.com after removing SEO links and reinstalling it. But I will truly appreciate you take a look at more Google extentions like .co.za local search :). Once again an excellent Job well done!

jim

teeney little problem - if there are no results from technorati it displays "NaN" rather than 0.

July 5, 2006 - 5:48pm

I hadn't had time to read all the replies here but I was wondering if it's possible to make this work with international versions of google and not only google.com ?

Anyway it's a great tool !

July 5, 2006 - 5:53pm

On this site if you use the tab key from the blog url textbox to the comments textarea you end up on the logo. you must have the tabindexes set incorrectly (or not at all).

The only thing about this SEO tool is that after I restart my computer and open Firefox the tool defaults to being ON and I have to tell it to turn off--in regards to your advice not to leave it on unless doing actual research, I suggest you default it to off.

Thanks for an otherwise great plugin :)

July 13, 2006 - 10:39am

Nice work Aaron, would be even cooler if it could add position numbers next to each search result listing. Would save me counting down the listings :)

I just get an message saying "Not a valid install package" when I try to get this. I uninstalled the newest Firefox and installed an older 1.01 version I had save the install package for and tried it again. Same message. Tried it with the newest version of Mozilla and still got the same message. Newest version of Firefox doesn't have a check box for "Allow" either. Tried adding this Web site address into the exceptions and still got the same message.
Download that is giving me the problem:

July 5, 2006 - 9:43pm

Even after browser restart the extension still shows up in my extension list as being active 'once FireFox is restarted.' I have shut down and restarted several times to no avail. Nothing shows up in the taskbar. Nothing for Google or Yahoo.

I have the latest FF with CustomizeGoogle (any many other extensions) installed.

This looks like a great tool; I'd love to get it working.

July 5, 2006 - 9:56pm

This is amazing!!! Installed. I'm loving it

July 14, 2006 - 1:35pm

to Joel Dare : you do it great. Google has 106 000 000 links from yahoo, try another else :

This plugin is coool , but exists for IE too?
I love IE...

July 5, 2006 - 10:15pm

December 26, 2006 - 9:12am

# PROBLEM WITH EXTENSION #

The latest version of the extension has a problem displaying the correct amount of Yahoo links.

Y! Links: 1,680
Y! Links: 685
Y! Links: 132,580

Every time I refresh the Y! Links amount changes.

Other than this small flaw the extension itself is great.
The book is great too, although I haven't finished reading it yet.

July 5, 2006 - 10:15pm

Loving the extension Aaron - one quick question though, can you tell us a bit about how domain age is calculated? I have tested the extension out on a couple domains I know about and noticed that the age is wrong....

robbie
August 27, 2006 - 3:31pm

Can anyone tell me why the View Bids function won't work for me? It keeps bringing up another code to type in and won't display the info. I also went direct to Overture's site with IE and firefox and got the same result. Do you need an account or a website to access this?

Kim Daschofaky
July 5, 2006 - 10:18pm

Haven't taken a look at it yet or anything else, but determined that something with the ZoneAlarm firewall program was blocking this. I determined this by entering the address for the download directly into Firefox. I had to close the firewall program first which isn't real cool, but I'm also behind a router with a built in hardware firewall so wasn't too worried about doing this for a couple of minutes.
http://tools.seobook.com/firefox/seo4firefox.xpi

Didn't work for the older version of Firefox. The download said that Firefox has to be Version 1.5 and up. Had to reinstall the newest version to get this. Btw, still couldn't download it and make it work without pasting the direct address above into the address bar of Firefox.

Yo!
May 16, 2007 - 7:39pm

Man, what did you do to this last version! I reinstalled windows (went to xp pro from home) and installed firefox. Installed your Seo plugin and right clicked the SEO button in my status bar and I can't see the useful links like "no follow" and other useful links there anymore! What did you do to them? Please please, enable them! Right clicking the button only turns it ON/OFF.

July 5, 2006 - 10:41pm

I'm just really sorry to say that it's still not working for me. I don't have any of the thus-reported conflicting extensions, but I have myriad others that must be causing some other conflict.

Dying to use the tool, but crushed that it won't seem to work on either Google or Yahoo.

I set the delays to be very long, and most of the queries are hidden except for a few just to see if it'll work...

any thoughts, Aaron?

July 5, 2006 - 10:44pm

Hi Abhilash
I wish I had an answer, but I don't know a lot about the various extensions, etc.

One option would be to write down all your extensions, and then uninstall them, and then add them back one or a few at a time and see if the tool still works.

Great tool but do you think you could get it to do my dishes ;-)

August 11, 2006 - 9:53pm

Yeah, that was a shock, I was 1/2 way through some link research with .edu sites and BOOM new Yahoo interface. Looking forward to the update.

January 11, 2007 - 2:36pm

HI
the tool has a problem:
when you type a search in google you get the results - and then you try to check the yahoo links by clicking on "Y!Links" you get the list but wrong details from the seo tool!

July 6, 2006 - 12:26am

Could you check for wikipedia links too?

Keith
July 6, 2006 - 12:32am

Interesting extension! I'm worried such aggressive searching of the result would cause any problem to the Google webserver? Constant usage may eventually cause an IP ban from Google.

December 14, 2006 - 7:18pm

Nice work, Aaron. I may need to include you now on my list of developers that know how to be famous. ;)

January 11, 2007 - 4:46pm

Aaron, I am about to try the 'throw your computer out the window" approach. I used to use and rave about this extension, but some time a while back I lost my extensions for some reason and since finding and reinstalling everything, I cannot have not been able to get this to work. I just finished deleting Better Search and SEO for Firefox since I read they may cause problems together. I rebooted, reinstalled SEO for FF and rebooted again. Still, nothing in the search results for google or yahoo. Not even the blue box indicating it's even slightly working. I can't think of anything else to change. I'm U.S. so it's not due to foreign search.

I want my SEO for Firefox back!! :-(

July 6, 2006 - 12:49am

Aaron this is a powerful tool (kudos) and I agree with you (and it could answer some questions people have left) that you must not use it when casually surfing, but I don't see a problem with it when doing real research! BUT, even with that said....I would love to hear any other thoughts you have on people using it to much and possibly getting thier IP banned by Google.

m
August 12, 2006 - 12:59am

Very nice. But it would be better if there were a link to the .xpi file, so it can be downloaded and installed easily, without hitting security block from Firefox. Please add such a link.

Also, when submitting a comment, it reads "Email Address (Real or leave blank)", but leaving no email address results in "Name and email address are required."

July 6, 2006 - 1:22am

Hi Aaron

Seems to be an Excellent tool !
But I think adding international domains like google.fr or yahoo.fr, either google.co.uk could be usefull.
Thanks a lot

Michael Thomas
July 6, 2006 - 3:05am

UPDATE: version 1.5.0.5 is up, adds support for google.co.uk, google.fr, and google.ca. Sorry for botching up the international support on the first release. Also helps compatibility with https sites.

Kirill, what precise problems were you having with https sites?

Mike Davis
July 6, 2006 - 4:02am

This software is nonsense. A nice way to get your listing down the toilet. Does it occur to anyone with the GToolbar also installed, exactly what kind of valuable SEO behaviors and info is gleaned about you when you start scraping this kind of data. It's also a violation of the TOS at these engines. How fitting that you decided to steal the Firefox logo without permission also.

Is there a reason the link to show the Supplemental results adds "adghasdtrb" after "view:"? Hey Aaron (or anyone who can help):

Aaron, what an awesome tool!
I would suggest, in a next release, to allow developers add custom Info Blocks.

An ideal architecture may let user to add a block title and block URI.
The URI can be either queried for a single result (for instance, as Google Cache Date does) or clicked as a shortcut (for instance, as Whois block does).

I developed a few public and private SEO tools and it would be great to be able to integrate them thanks to this architecture. :)

Greetings Aaron,

I'd like to know if there are any issues with the Google API service and your 'SEO for Firefox' extension. It seems to me that to use a tool like this requires a Google API license key.

July 16, 2006 - 6:51pm

Last I checked Google does not allow you to get PageRank values with the API.

July 6, 2006 - 12:28pm

Awesome plugin - just some constructive feedback:

Another conflicting plugin - mcafee site advisor. with that installed, you get an error about "url.replace is not a function" when also using SEO for Firefox

And, a feature request: show the result number (placement) next to the search result.

Fantastic piece of work. Useful beyond belief. The age reported by archive.org doesn't seem to be accurate, though. It doesn't match up with what archive.org reports when you visit their site.

July 16, 2006 - 9:59pm

as muskie says it works best with Firefox 1.5.0.4

What I mean to say is are you sure your tool is on the up-and-up as far as pulling all this data from search engines? Somebody mentioned earlier that this tool violates the Google TOS and I'm inclined to agree. Have you checked it out to make sure you're not violating any search engine Terms of Service agreements?

November 30, 2006 - 10:42am

Great tool. But do you plan to extend it to other regional interfaces like Google.be, Google.fr...?

July 17, 2006 - 2:02am

If there is no way to grab data points within the TOS then if you grab that data you violate the TOS.

Pretty straightforward there.

January 23, 2007 - 5:38pm

I would like to suggest some improvements to "SEO for Firefox".

Currently, if there is in code written rel="nofollow", links are highlighted, but if it's rel="external nofollow" (which can also be used; as Google said when announced nofollow attribute, anything can be written inside rel with nofollow).
Also, there is a problem if I click on icon for SEO in taskbar, nothing happens immediately. It'll be better if when it's clicked, highlights disappear or appear.
Both of these things are working in add-on SearchStatus.

January 12, 2007 - 1:13pm

That's a cool; tool.Need to get more information on it to get optimal benefits .I just wonder if it is active when going through different websites and how to check the details gathered.

srp
July 6, 2006 - 6:50pm

a cool addition would be a 'guestbook' option .. it would check to see how many of the yahoo backlinks come from a page or url with the word 'guestbook' or 'guest-book' in there. just for those of us who're very competitive areas where guestbook and blog spamming are the order of the day :)

August 20, 2006 - 5:05am

seo for firefox has stopped working with yahoo?

are you aware of this?

Yes defenity you have to think about the other languages.
In French it would bevery nice.
Good Job for this addon !

Does no longer work in Google.
It shows on every different link the seo info for google.com only.
Yahoo works.
Last week It worked ok, afair.
Did google changed something?
ooops: After using SEO with yahoo it works again with google. Strange.

Rob
July 17, 2006 - 12:11pm

Uhhh... You're not being exactly clear there, Aaron. Without making me plow through all the TOS agreements myself, are you saying 'Yes, I know for a fact that this tool does not violate any search engine TOS'? Or are you not sure yourself?

July 6, 2006 - 9:24pm

Hey Aaron, re your coder issues. We have good coders who don't have the lure of pretty girls at college.

You have gone done a path we were thinking of taking SearchStatus. Maybe we could work together on something...
Either way, sweet tool!

January 24, 2007 - 4:23am

This plugin is awesome. I'm starting a new website and will use this tool for sure. Awesome work, and awesome site.

July 6, 2006 - 9:26pm

The problems with https:// based sites are in the generated links. Try the following -
1. Go to Yahoo
2. Search for "liquid look and feel"
3. The first result should be "liquidlnf: Project Home Page " which is a https-based URL.
4. Hover over the links that this plugin produces. Some of them point to empty https: (like Age and Links) and some are like this:
http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=link:http://https%3a//liquidlnf.dev.jav...
(like PageLinks)

Kirill

July 17, 2006 - 12:17pm

Just to reiterate my last 2 comments (verbatim)...

Last I checked Google does not allow you to get PageRank values with the API.

If there is no way to grab data points within the TOS then if you grab that data you violate the TOS.

The ".edu Page Links" does not work properly, as I have 12 and it displays only 2, and ".gov" doesn't work at all, as I have 2, and it displays none.

Otherwise I can only say, it is a very useful tool.

Sunni
February 17, 2007 - 12:18am

When I first installed the extension, I was able to see the line of links it inserted below each result entry in a Google Search. Very cool.

But now, nothing. They've vanished.

I still have KW Trends | View Bids | AW Sandbox | Traffic Estimator | Trends under the Google Search bar. It's toggled "on."

I have done an update. I have rebooted. I'm using 1.5.0.9 Firefox on Win XP standalone PC. For extensions, I have Talkback, Search Status, Web Developer, Firebug, Colorzilla, Foxytunes, Aardvark, LinkChecker, MeasureIt and FireFTP.

I have it's options set to the default right now.

Any ideas?

July 6, 2006 - 10:05pm

Looks like a cool tool but its not working for me... the display does not show anything.

I will try to install the latest version of firefox ... maybe it works then

July 17, 2006 - 5:52pm

Sorry Aaron... But if you can't come straight out and say, "The use of this tool definitely does not violate any search engine TOS" then I would have to say I'm not willing to take the risk in using it.

Thanks anyway...

July 7, 2006 - 3:15am

Neat tool. Noticed one issue. When using in Google, the ".edu links" command processes a linkdomain:www.google.com command, so its returning .edu links to google rather than to the corresponding site.

July 7, 2006 - 4:22am

Cool stuff, Aaron, well done :)
Took me a second to figure out it wasn't working on google.com.au and switch googles - another vote for putting the cc tlds on the todo list from me :)

I just got the latest which has a new layout; however, there are not any of the options available to configure. It looks like they should be in box, but the box with all the things to show/not show is totally empty.

The tool is currently unusable in this state.

Hi Aaron, really love this book.

This add-on... I am dying to try this out, I installed it into Firefox 2.0 and it doesn't run. Firefox isn't allowing it to. It says "Not compatible with Firefox 2.0". Checking for updates, shows no updates. No one else is seeing this?

@Ray Rose

You seriously need to upgrade, there are lots of vulnerabilities patched in version 1.5. And it does automatic updates so you'll never have to go out of your way to upgrade ever again.

v1.5 of Firefox also added a lot of things that makes extension development easier, and that's why this extension is only compatible with v1.5 and higher.

October 26, 2006 - 4:13am

Labrys, your best bet to prevent this kind of lock-out is to set everything to "on demand." If nothing else, at least crank the delay for del.icio.us up to 5 seconds.

If we don't use tools like this conscientiously, they're likely to get banned outright.

Found another conflicting extension. The Diigo tool bar which lets you bookmarek Diigo and several other social sites. I have confirmed that this conflict prevents SEO for FireFox from working in both google and yahoo.

To bad about that it is a great tool but being able to put all my new pages into 8 social sites with only a few key strokes is a priority over this.

July 8, 2006 - 1:53am

Aaron, thanks for adding the newest tool to my SEO arsenal. I came here looking for a spider simulator and left with so much more... ok, enough A-- kissing.

It's a nice one and it sure up's the anti between the "have's and have not's"... glad I am one of the "have's".

July 8, 2006 - 4:13am

Hi Michael

The web is in some ways an equalizer in that it offers a low cost route to build a self sustaining value added lifestyle based on wide audience aggregation. If you are passionate about what you do and you can mix the web into your mode of expressing yourself there are many more ways for people to connect with it than if you are stuck limited to the limitations brought by the physical world.

The goal of this site is to make it as easy as possible to help market quality sites, and I appreciate that I was able to help you, and appreciate your kind words.
Cheers

Hi,

I had some conflicts as well and after going over my zillion firefox extensions it seems that for me the culprit is Conquery 1.7.3

After disabling this one, all works fine again. Bit of a bummer as Conquery is rather useful. Gotta make choices though:)

Thanks for the great plugin. Some features won't work here in China, mentioned that before, but enough data to work with

November 7, 2006 - 12:36pm

Hi.

I was figuring out how to program my own extensions (and then I will deliver to everyone) and watching your extension i saw that the creator is

creator="Michael O. Thomas"

Did you program Aaron or did you hire a programmer?

I need to know this because I want to know if is really hard to do, because my programming skills are almost gone. So maybe the effort will be too much for too little result.

BTW, good Extension.

Cavan
November 15, 2006 - 6:52pm

Jason, have you tested it on Yahoo? As of this post it was still working. I think this is an issue of Google preventing the results box from appearing, rather than anything with Firefox.

Mike is a friend of mine who created the extension for me. I am NOT a programmer at this point

July 4, 2006 - 9:08pm

Awesome tool Aaron!

I like how you can turn it on and off with one click, and how configurable it is.

How about some feature requests:!

1 - Some sort of loading progress indicator, at the moment it still is loading when the firefox loading indicator has stopped. How about make that little SEO icon spin while it's loading.

2 - Be able to re-arrange the order of the listings by one of the information points, i.e. sort by PR, age etc..

But great tool well done!

July 4, 2006 - 9:13pm

It's cool, but only currently works in Yahoo! for me.

July 4, 2006 - 9:17pm

After I restarted my browser I expected it to display the stats along the statusbar like the SearchStatus extension. Confused, I was about to comment and ask how it works but when I searched Google for Aaron Wall--viola! it works perfect.

Very good programmer you have. This is a gold-mine of source code also, thanks.

July 4, 2006 - 9:21pm

Great tool!

One issue I have found is that if, for example, you search for "amazon" (without quotes), it will say that there are 143,000 cached pages for amazon.com, but there are actually 143,000,000 cached pages for amazon.com.

There is a similar issue with Alexa, though it doesn't affect Amazon because their Alexa rank is so low (15, currently). It only affects sites that have a Alexa rank that is, say, in the millions. When a site has an Alexa rank of 2,000,000, it is reporting it as 2,000.

Note: both of those issues affect Google, I am not sure about Yahoo.

Fantastic tool, though!

Isn't the logo for this infringing on the Firefox trademark because you use their exact logo?

July 4, 2006 - 9:35pm

Hi Mark
I wasn't too thrilled with the logo bit either, but my designer / programmer is equally hard headed as he is skilled, and insisted on going with the current logo (in fact he made that up without me even asking or mentioning anything about a logo).

If the people at FF care then I will get the designer to change the logo to something more boring in nature, maybe snagging the SEO part from my site logo.

July 4, 2006 - 9:37pm

Great extension, thanks Aaron! but for some reason it only seems to work with Yahoo for me, not in Google? I use FF 1.5.04, standard Google setting. Any clue?

August 8, 2006 - 3:02am

My check is not just to see if it is dmoz listed, but also to see if other dmoz listed pages link to it

as far as Matt's comment on .edu links goes, it is a nice theory, but in actuality, those pages tend to be in better neighborhoods and have better MORE NATURAL link profiles (and I think Matt also said something similar to that as well, so your quote was only part of the whole story).

Aaron,

one hell of a job, man. As a matter of fact, i'd just put down some of the things i'd like in a really good competitive-minded FF extension. Then i get an email that you've just launched it. Way to go.

That said, it doesn't work in Google or Yahoo for me. FF v1.5.0.4. Not using an int'l version of Google. Could it be an issue with the theme I use (hey, I have no idea), but I've checked the settings, restarted everything, etc. etc...

Both Google or Yahoo are not loading data for me. I see the data bars below each results, but it just lists questions marks after each category.

July 4, 2006 - 11:57pm

Great tool Aaron but I'm not getting the full effect either. Using FF v1.5.0.4 all the PR results load but I get no additional data.

July 5, 2006 - 12:00am

For the ? marks, that is the default for most categories. If you read the installation instructions it tells you how to set what you prefer to have automatically pulled in, and I go so far as stating recommended settings to use.

I figured that the people who would not read the install and usage instructions would also be the types of people who would be abusive in their usage of the tool, so by default I left most of the data points off.

I was also told that Firefox BetterSearch 1.12 extension blocks this tool, and have not yet tested the compatibility with CustomizeGoogle or anything like that.

I believe the comma error mentioned above should be fixed as well now too.

1. Caching
2. Ability to add a long list of proxies from a predefined site, or text file, and then check those to see if they are working and truely anonymous
3. Export results to CSV feature.
Have it

Otherwise it is perfect.
Thank you!

1. The "Age" .The Internet Archive home page is accesible here in Shanghai but searching for a domain gives a an error. Maybe related to the Nanny, aka Chinese firewall

2. Technorati which has to do with the China firewall up here. The goverment doesn't seem to like tagging

so these things can't be helpded for now which brings me to a third point:

I noticed that the extension doesn't work for me when I use a webbased proxy (as mentioned before the local gov feels not all sites on the net are good for my well being, and at times I just don't agree:) There may be a very valid reason for this but I thought I mention it.

I second some of the suggestion here:

1 - Be able to re-arrange the order of the listings by one of the information points, i.e. sort by PR, age etc..
2. Export results
3. Localized versions of GG and Y+

Anyway, as said before, a great tool. Thanks!

Is there a way to get this working for international users in Google? Works with Yahoo.

Very impressive Aaron.

Aaron, this tool is really cool. You can damn well bet I'll be adding it to my arsenal of tools, along with putting it up on the WickedFire.com tools page.

Aaron,

Superb tools. You have been giving a lot back to the community, really respect that.

I have the same problem with Miles Evans too. It only seems to work under Google.com domain, but not international search - Google.com.my (in my country, for example). Is there any way we can make it work for this?

Thanks!

July 5, 2006 - 7:24am

I'm suspicious/paranoid of free SEO tools so I have to ask: are my queries/data being stored somewhere if I use this Aaron?

It is a nice tool and very useful, thanks!

July 5, 2006 - 7:27am

The data is not stored anywhere, in fact one of the features some people want is for it to be stored locally on their own machines. It doesn't even do that yet.

I don't even harvest keyword research from my meta search engine or keyword research tool.

Thanks, for the Diigo heads up. I am been frustrated trying to figure out why it wouldn't work for the past month.

Hello dev team :)

I am a member of eXtenZilla.org, the Italian portal for extensions.
We are a community dedicated to the translation of extensions for moz family apps.
I noticed your interesting extension was missing a locale structure, so I created one.

A first beta version are visible here:

http://www.hackworld.it/xpi/seo4firefox.xpi

Of course I did not changed the main core code but I transformed all strings for the user interface into entities in the locale folder.

Now it is more easily translatable, and I added the it-IT locale.

I hope my small contribution will help your extension to be translated in a good number of languages.

Regards

Hello Aaron, just trying out your FF plugin and it works pretty good. However when I use multiple tabs in FF it seems to break down. Proceedure to replicate breakage:

1. Search @ Google/Yahoo
2. Click an on demand question mark. (works)
3. CTRL-Click a link to open some page in a new tab
4. Click an on demand question mark. (broken)

I have alot of extensions installed so it could be due to some conflict somewhere. Anyone else experience this problem?

Aaron, I noticed a problem with the tool yesterday on Yahoo!. They have many of their links going through a redirect, which causes the tool to look for
"rdre1.yahoo.com" rather than the actual domain.

I think the rdre1 is for PFI links?

December 6, 2006 - 12:50pm

Hey Aaron, big fan of your work

The tool is awesome but have you thought about putting in a traceroute option or a DNS lookup of the A value of a domain so you can see where a site is hosted on the go? :)

Be sure to check out seoquake which is an excellent free add-on for firefox. Seoquake has a few added feautes over the "seo for firefox" plugin.

Hi Aaron,

I don't know if this is being mentioned before but the already provided feedback is too much for me to wade through to see if it is already mentioned but i would like to leave a suggestion:

An option to highlight a phrase - keyword and then right click to choose,

Search Google with quotes

So i could for instance highlight a keyword and choose that option in the right-click drop menu to be directed to Google and the query with quotes is being done for me.

"keyword"

This way you wouldn't have to type everything into Google but a simple -->Highlight -->Right click -->Search with quotes would make things a lot easier.

July 5, 2006 - 8:12am

Great Tool. One question: Is it possible to use this with google.de, too?

July 12, 2006 - 1:20am

Great tool, how about some on-page analysis as well? Maybe a keyword density figure? (I know this may be irrelevent but IMO its another bit of information that we should be looking at).

I have a problem with Yahoo!. It showing me 999 error:
"Sorry, Unable to process request at this time"
Reasons:
* You may want to scan your system for spyware and viruses, as they may interfere with your ability to connect to Yahoo!. For detailed information on spyware and virus protection, please visit the Yahoo! Security Center.
* This problem may be due to unusual network activity coming from your Internet Service Provider. We recommend that you report this problem to them.

It was working for me until now. And Archive.org have they own problems - 404 errors when you try to "go back". I hope they will fix it soon.

Your extension it's great. Keep up the good job.
Just add some results export and all G and Y! international domains and it's enough. Thank you.

First Things First:

It works great, but, where do I find the extension, on/off button, when there is no Firefox bottom toolbar on my Mac
And yes I am only casually surfing,.. Google doesnt like it.

"If you are casually surfing please turn this extension off. Only turn it on if you are actively researching a market"

OK......

I'd like to comply, but like I say, "where do you get it"?

Any suggestions?

Just noticed this within the last few days, I'm thinking this coincides with an automatic update for SEO Firefox maybe last week? Can't remember, but everything works fine for the 1st page of Google search results, what I have set to automatic, is automatically populated. When I select next, for the second page of any search results, nothing will automatically populate. Same is true for any other page, other than the 1st page results. I have the latest update for both firefox and seo firefox.

This is also the case for any Yahoo result as well. Anybody else experiencing this same problem?

Hi Aaron, the extension rocks. I use it daily and it plays a large part in my overall research process. Thanks for it! One suggestion I have is to add a feature similar to SEO Quake's External and Internal Links button on their toolbar. Essentially it counts the number of external/internal links on a page. For example this page links to hundreds of external pages and links to several internal pages. I didn't read through all the comments so apologies if this has already been suggested.

April 5, 2008 - 9:33pm

I will ask the programmer if we can do that Adam.

AdamMoro
April 9, 2008 - 5:54am

Thanks Aaron! I've got some more suggestions if you want them. Don't get me wrong, most of them are really picky and probably not worth mentioning but some have merit I think. One is to make the Lookup this Page data a little quicker to access. For example (and remember I warned you about potential picky-ness), I can right-click and hover the SEO for Firefox menu item and then click the Lookup this Page option. As crazy as this may sound, a direct link to the data from the main right-click menu would make a huge difference (for me at least). Ideally, a toolbar displaying the data directly would be my vote. Anyway, thanks again for taking the suggestion!

April 9, 2008 - 5:13pm

In the next major update we will try to do the right cick idea.

Hi I am using the latest version of firefox and seo for firefox. Whenever I set anything to automatic, all I get is a question mark "?" at where the value is suppose to be at. However if I set it to on-demand and then click on the question mark, it would return the value fine. What is going on? Why is automatic not working for me? Anyone else experience this?

June 14, 2008 - 11:19pm

Have you read the install instructions and tried putting the tool in automatic mode? By default it is in on demand mode for three reasons.

  • to lessen the load on the search engines by making it less convenient for abusive users who do not read the install script
  • to help ensure that people only use it in automatic when they really need to
  • to make it so I am not getting 50 emails a day about someone's IP getting blocked
