I never even KNEW there was an intro thread. :) I've commented a few times in some threads but since there is a nice handy little intro thread... *ahem*

My name is Kristi and I've been in the SEO world since 1999, submitting sites to the Yahoo editors and flirting with them (and bribing them) to get my clients in the directory and then getting them in without paying the $299 fee. I went to the very first Search Engine Strategies conference in San Fran and have been to many others after it.

I took a break for a few years to raise my kids but generally kept up with the SEO world in my Google Reader but recently went back to work at a fantastic little wine storage company. I am now working here at Grotto Custom Wine Cellars and am loving jumping back into the SEO detail work.

Thanks for keeping the blog alive. :) I'm waiting to beg my new boss to allow me access into the SEOBook community soon.

Hey all - I'm a stay at home dad and over the last few years I've tried to keep my mind sharp between temper tantrums, play doh and dress up by challenging myself to learn new things.

Learning SEO is my new challenge to myself and I'm excited to put what I learn into action.

Excited to learn something new...

Many leading sites at some point have operated in the gray area. I think it is part of the growth cycle for many...you do what you have to do in order to see results. And then when you start to build something of value your desire to take large risks (and your need to take large risks) both diminish.

Hi

My name's Ros and I'm "trying" to learn internet marketing. I have a laptop full of information I've downloaded and now I'm totally confused! Each top guru recommends something different and SO MANY different ways of getting traffic.

Can anybody give me a brain transplant so that I can absorb all this information and even better - act on it??!!

Only joking, but it sure is a minefield!

July 16, 2010 - 10:42am

Hi Ros.

Here is an easy way to filter through the garbage. Anytime a single person recommends a dozen "must have" programs then you know they are willing to put their name on trash. Ignore anything they endorse (& them).

Anytime you get emails from 2 or more marketing lists at the same time promoting a product or service launch presume it is junk and ignore it - unsubscribe from those affiliate commission driven hype launch email sequences.

Doing those 2 items should filter out most of the noise will still leaving all the signal worth listening too.

Hi everybody

my name is Keith and I am an older generation newbie.
In the last few weeks, my wife Elaine & I have launched a new web site in the UK www.toyseducational.co.uk

Having fathomed out stage one, we now find that stage 2 or SEO is our latest challenge. My PC is full of saved advice from so called guru's, and I am pleased to read the feedback for SEO Book.

Looking forward to learning the real stuff without wasting a fortune we do not have.... yet. (ever the optimist)

Regards

Keith

August 7, 2010 - 1:17am

Welcome to the site Keith & careful on what most of those "gurus" recommend (if they are the internet marketing type). Most IM types hawking stuff via email newsletters typically hype incomplete/inaccurate/useless crap based on getting an affiliate commission. Though there is a hint of utility to some of their recommendations, so it keeps you on your toes...but I just tend to tune out to any marketing information or products marketed via email :)

Hi,
my name is Arjun and i manage a company based out of India running three websites, an astrology services website ( www.clickastro.com ), an astrology software products website ( www.indianastrologysoftware.com ) and a Kerala based matrimonial website called www.malayogamonline.com . These sites have been up and running for more than 4 years (one of them is around 7 year old!), but until recently we didnt have too much of a focus on SEO and SEM. Over the last one year we've outsourced SEO as well as SEM activities, but the results havent been encouraging at all. This prompted me to undertake SEM and SEO activities on my own - and the results have been most encouraging. Ive read a lot of about SEObook.com and so decided to take the plungs and dive deep into the subject so that i can take the websites to much higher rankings. Incidently, on taking up SEM on my own i was able to double the results at 1/5th of the cost ! I guess i was paying through the nose for SEM, and i dont want to do the same for SEO.

Hey guys... we're software geeks that have somehow entered into the space of teaching SEO to real estate agents. It's not enough for us to provide real estate software solutions (property search, lead capture, and websites). Our clients are struggling with understanding organic lead generation, niche branding, and creating credibility online.

Ultimately, we want to help agents work through this struggling economy by expanding their market reach beyond their limited and personal sphere of influence.

I look forward to learning a lot from the community and hopefully, we can share some of what we know.

My name is Ray and I'm new to this new career. I was introduced to this by a friend thats been doing this for years and I only been at it for a month and I'm starting to get the hang of it, but there is so many ways to build your site, but still it's hard to decipher which information is good and bad. I'm at the point where I'm link building and I'm lost and getting frustrated. There's no step by step. So I was told to come to this page and read up on what link building was about. I'm trying to get traffic to my site so I'm trying to get as much info as I can. Seems like I'm in the right spot. Wish everyone luck and success..I know I'm going to need it!

October 4, 2010 - 11:43pm

Welcome to the site Ray.

You are right that there is no 1 correct step-by-step way to build links. Link building can come down to include all sorts of different disciplines, like:

  • public relations
  • advertising
  • psychology
  • sociology
  • market research
  • content creation & publishing
  • etc.

A couple good spots to start coming up with some ideas would be this blog post and our 12 week link building roadmap. The former is free & the later is part of our training program.

I am looking to improve my SE rankings for my website http://www.wienslawncare.com I have uploaded a Lawn Tips video series on Youtube and several other video sites and done some blogging as well to improve my rankings. I used Google adwords to get my business from part time in 2009 to full time in 2010 but it cost me a fortune. So I am a brand new lawn and tree care business. The name's Sekah, and I have zero experience with all of this. I just made my first website, a cute little database for an old animanga (that's Japanese cartoons to the laypeople), and am challenging myself to learn, and make it the best it can possibly be.

I'd never coded anything beyond a livejournal layout before a few weeks ago, so we'll see how this goes. I'm a bit dazzled by all the possibilities. If I ask a clueless question, please be kind! Oh, and treat me like an idiot and give me step-by-step information if I do. I know a lot about Chekhov, Salinger and Stendhal, but little to nothing about PHP and codes (though I'm learning).

Thanks again!

Hi everyone, I'm a marketing manager from just outside London. I've just been involved in redesigning the company website and have done some loooong and tedious manual work (minus anything remotely resembling a budget) to do some decent SEO on it. monkeyLearns
January 26, 2011 - 12:47pm

Hi5! I have always thought this SEO thing was all smoke and mirrors. Lately I am starting to realize that there are things which I am actually ignorant about. Hopefully I'll come out wiser with my experiences here.

January 26, 2011 - 2:23pm

Hi Seawoodjr
You may need to clear cookies & try to login again. The issue is that we have upgraded from Drupal 5 to Drupal 6 to Drupal 7. When we did the upgrade from 5 to 6 it went quite smooth ... it was fast and there were only a couple minor issues. But when we moved to Drupal 7 there were tons of issues with the authentication systems, automated user redirections, etc.

We have fixed a lot of those redirect issues, but the truth is we still have some stuff that we can make far more efficient from a usability perspective. A LOT. We are sorta torn with how many of them to fix right away because we are also installing another membership software package to do membership management stuff. Once we install that the user sign up process will be far cleaner & smoother. So we are sorta pushing against fighting fires while we are trying to install another system that will create a few more fires at launch (much fewer) and will thankfully put out many of the existing fires.

Hi monkeyLearn
A lot of what is sold is of course smoke and mirrors stuff, but that is because what people typically see first is the loudest and most obnoxious sales pitches (which over-promise and under-deliver). But there are a lot of folks who use SEO strategically as a core part of their businesses.

I saw your SEO add-on via YOLA. If anyone hasn't found a nice simple web creation tool go check out Yola, after NING got snippy we joined those who bailed and went to Yola.com and webs.com

Socialsquatch.com is our 1st attempt at doing an SEO company, and we'd like to start small and learn by working with local SEO and local smartphone (mobile) SEO then when we get our processes down to a system we'll get into the nationwide and worldwide markets.

Thanks, for this awesome tool now I can show people just how bad they need SEO right from my favorite browser.

Just joined SEO Book today despite reading the blog posts for a while now. Wanted to comment on the Google content farm conspiracy post and ended up here - must get back on focus!
I live in London and work on local search marketing in the UK where I help business owners build a persona - an online presence that highlights them as an expert. I love reading about SEO so I thought I should embrace this geekess side of me and start joining in with all the activity. I need to focus more on UK blogs for relevancy but I decided just to focus on great content instead - and it doesn't get much better than what is here!
Look forward to becoming a regular contributor

Hi all.

I am owner of a web development company. We focus on Web Design and Development, including frameworks like Drupal, Wordpress, Magento (ecommerce), Custom Solutions, Social Networking websites etc, but NO SEO.

I realize this is high time we get into SEO. I don't like to add-on something which I am not aware of, thus, the need to BE AN EXPERT IN SEO arises, including Viral Marketing and Social Media Marketing.

I hope the community here will help me learn the above three. I promise I'll be a good listener, student and implementor :))

Thanks all,

I've known about SEO Book for years and used to read the blog regularly. My focus on SEO shifted away for a while and so I stepped away for a bit but now I'm back. I just downloaded all the tools and can't wait to use them! I do SEO consulting for a few brands, which I've done for several years, and I also just started a new job where SEO will be part of my role. I am SO ready for some new tools and new ideas to refresh my perspective on SEO! I've been getting down by all the black hat stuff out there because it's so frustrating to be one of the "good guys" and not see any results, while the "bad guys" are ranking high. So I'm trying to find some new energy and some good advice from other "good guys" to rejuvenate my existing program and help out in my new job. Looking forward to learning and sharing with you all!

I am new to all of this but am looking to start a blog. I have a long history of being told that I need to write and while I can come up with short renditions, I rarely find that I have enough to fill a book. I thought blogging would be a way to wet my feet and learn the ropes. Thank you for all of the information and I look forward to perusing the material and tools. Thanks so much!

Hi, my self cheeku, and here is how i got here, i actually came across this forum about an year back when i was starting a couple of gaming sites, i then started doing some self SEO as well as hiring SEO professionals, as a result one of my sites got good ranking for a very competitive keyword, i was ranked number 2. I stayed there and i made some money. Then about a few months back i was thrown away from my top spot to number 22 . I then started frantically spending on SEO packages and spent more then i earned with no success. The big question is i still do not know why my site went down and i hence want to learn SEO in depth to be not in such a situation again.

Now that i have no desire to spend on SEO and do every thing my self i decided to join Aron walls' blog, i will not be making any purchases , but i just hope there is enough free resource here that will help me .

Once again nice to be here.

Regards
Cheeku

Hi all, I am a 3 month newbie to IM and plan on learning as much as fast as I can. I got let go from my "job" on Dec 23rd, 2010 after spending 10 years working as a vet. No warning, no severance, just "we're going to let you go." I have a wife, a daughter and a granddaughter living with me and I figure the best way to avoid any type of dependency on another boss is to work for myself. I commit to learning all I can about internet marketing and SEO and run my life my way.
Glad to be her!

though a couple things I will warn are that I got a job for a while when I was starting out to give me runway, and I also cut my living costs to almost nothing...you really have to push hard to make the web work from scratch while having many people relying on you. I hope you are on that never-ending unemployment benefits crap the US government is doing so you can still have a steady paycheck and a bit of a chance to have a go before you are required to make profits...be careful about trying to succeed overnight...a lot of fleecers feed on people who are desperate.

I'm Kara and my husband and I just launched a new business using WordPress for the site and BigCommerce for the shopping cart. We hired a web designer to set things up, but want to maintain as much of it by ourselves as we can. The site is brand new so we need to build awareness, and we're currently trying to learn all we can about SEO, social media, building links, creating pay-per-click campaigns and any other information we can find!
