Both Bill Slawski and Todd Malicoat posted great posts about duplicate content detection and how to avoid producing duplicate content.
Todd also posted a link to this shingles PDF, which describes some of the ways to detect duplicate content.

It was fun to see Todd's post about duplicate content this morning, and that he approached the topic from a completely different direction than I did.
The pdf from William Pugh is interesting stuff. I'm not sure that I've seen another contractor for Google write about the actual work that he had done when working with Google.
Sometime after he originally published it online, it disappeared from the web, and was only accessible via the Google cache (html version) for the page. It reappeared a while back, and does a nice job of explaining the idea of snippets. (I posted about it at Cre8asite Forums in a thread in November, and it was only available via the "html" version.)
Quick question - does duplicate content include a tagline or related copy that is repeated on every page of a site?
Thanks in advance.
They do not want to create penalties for things that occur frequently and naturally across the portions of the web that are generally pages with decent content quality.
