Are You Going to WMW Las Vegas Pubcon?

I think the Las Vegas Pubcon from November 14 to November 17 is probably going to be the SEO event of the year.

Here is my top 18 reasons to attend...

  1. At $489 (currently), conference passes are exceptionally affordable.

  2. If you are cheap (as I am), Las Vegas is a cheap city to travel to. Many of the hotels cost like $30 a night if you book them with your flight. Circus Circus anyone?
  3. Caveman will be there. He will be mad at me for listing that last item, and thus I will correct my stance by offering up the next item.
  4. If you like a sweet suite there are numerous 5 star hotels. Bellagio anyone?
  5. Danny Sullivan will keynote, which means a chance to meet Danny AND there will probably be even more crossover between the SES and WMW crowds.
  6. Last year one of my friends won over $25,000 playing blackjack.
  7. Sweetest session ever!
  8. It is warm there.
  9. Many of my friends are going to an SEO conference for the first time, including John, Giovanna, and some of the Andy Hagans posse.
  10. I think my recent diet has been going better than Andy's, I weigh less now, and I will use the opportunity to gloat. If I can get below 200 lbs., Andy will be forced to eat haggis.
  11. Werty will be eating Kobe style beef. He intends to try his best to experience a full on meat coma.
  12. I get to speak on a panel with Rand.
  13. I will get to meet many other friends I haven't seen in a while.
  14. Travel within Las Vegas is easy via the monorail.
  15. I have lots of new cartoon t-shirts to wear.
  16. Related to last item, Joe Morin will likely host at least one clothing intervention :)
  17. With so much spam marketing covering the streets of Vegas Matt will have his guard and spam sensors de-tuned.
  18. Cirque du Soleil...rumor has it, Werty has a surprise guest appearance in the show this year.

Other preparation notes: if you wear white sneakers expect to get bounced by the bouncers! Some of them hate shorts too.

I will be there too, Aaron, I am flying in for a day and a half and flying out. I hope to meet you and Rand, god knows I use your tools enough to at least hunt you down and shake your hands. I will be on the SEO 101 panel and would love some feedback if you have the time to peek your head in!

SEE you there.

October 12, 2006 - 2:13pm

I will be there. This will be my second pubcon. They great time and the people I met at the last one in Boston make this a no brainer. That and the fact I have yet to go to Vegas. Should be a great time!

October 12, 2006 - 5:46pm

I don't know anyone and work alone, should I still consider attending?

I like people, but just have not attended any of these conferences. Seems like a newcomer might be stuck around the periphery.

October 12, 2006 - 8:56pm

Hi Jim
If I never attended any conferences I wouldn't be doing as well as I am now (socially, physically, mentally, financially).

I always like meeting new people, and many of us webmasters are sorta outliers, so when we get together we sorta click well I think. It is always worth meeting people.

October 19, 2006 - 10:04pm

hey Aaron, I will be there, I got everything booked and set up. Let me know which ones I can find you at so I can take a pic with you and just thank you for all your advice and help. Also which seminars do you suggest going to for a more advanced person when it comes to SEO? The reason I ask is that I was at the SES NYC this year and went to some seminars that were less then impressive and was very dissapointed. There were some like Eric Ward and a few others that were really good, but was wondering which ones you would not miss. Thanks,

October 20, 2006 - 12:46am

Hi Mat
I like the site reviews with the search engineers on it. Those are always really fun.

Not sure how many of the speeches I will hear though because I am going to be hanging out with so many friends at the conference.

October 13, 2006 - 12:05am

Aaron, bouncers and bar managers only hate white tennis shoes and shorts AFTER 10pm.

October 22, 2006 - 1:35pm

Dear Aaron,
Thank, I'll do what I can to try and have him send me to PubCon... hopefully I'll see all you guys there :)

October 13, 2006 - 11:09pm

Yep, I'd recommend jeans and black dress shoes if you expect to get into any of the clubs.

October 25, 2006 - 1:54am

Hey Aaron, funny post

- yeah - looking forward to Vegas - this will be great fun again and I'm staying there Saturday - Saturday which will mean A LOT of time for Heli tours, some nice shows (have seen 4 last year) and definately some hidden euro-style food (yes: ask me - I know one italian that has REAL salad...) ... that should be just right for your diet if you want to keep it

Did you do the Grand Canyon flights or boat trips?

cheers, christoph

I need your advice -
I managed convincing my boss sending me to PubCon !
But turned out that I’m the only person from my firm being sent there, and I’m shy to say that I never attended such event before, only I don’t know anyone so I don’t know exactly what’s the score… seems to me that everybody there knows everybody, and I wouldn’t know how to network…

November 6, 2006 - 5:07pm

Hi Codith
call me if you want when you get there and I will say hi to ya and help you meet other people.

also dont be afraid to just talk to strangers and get in the mix. just a few years ago I was brand new stranger guy who knew nobody and people have been exceptionally kind to me.

November 7, 2006 - 5:47pm

Thank you so much!!! I'll give you a call when I'll be there.

Codith (Noga Katz).

October 17, 2006 - 3:39pm

Seems good enough reasons for going there...
However, it's not enough for my boss... I really whant to go there, but he's not convinced it's worth the money (anyone said cheep ?) and so I need some good stiff reasons to convince him... I was wondering if anyone can help me with that...

October 11, 2006 - 6:15am

Was in vegas for the first time in June.Been looking for the perfect excuse to get back there. This is it :)

Although.... flights from Ireland are NOT cheap.

October 11, 2006 - 6:52am

I heard werty is also planning to bring back his alligator wrestling routine. Looking forward to it mate.

October 11, 2006 - 7:17am

I'm sooo there! If there are two things I love, it is being a nerd and Las Vegas!

October 17, 2006 - 6:53pm

Hi Codith
Without knowing anything about your boss it is hard to know how to appeal to him. I suspect you are going to have to figure out ways to drive his motivations in a way that you would know better than us. All I can stress is to somehow stress value and how much money he can make.

October 11, 2006 - 7:42am

I'll be there, and speaking on a panel. I'm looking forward to it. See you there.

October 11, 2006 - 8:03am

Now that I sold out I have more time to do this stuff. Golf at Bali Hai anyone?

October 11, 2006 - 8:07am

oh yeah, wouldn't miss it. always meet some cool people and learn something worthwhile.

October 11, 2006 - 8:48am

Being a Scot, I gotta voice the objection at Haggis being forced upon someone for losing a bet! It is actually quite nice, allbeit a required taste. ;)

October 11, 2006 - 12:47pm

Aaron, I am just in the process of booking flight from NYC to LAS and some accommodation in LAS. Can you recommend me travel sites where can I find flight+accommodation package deals? Thanks!

October 11, 2006 - 1:04pm

Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity are probably the most popular travel site brands.

October 11, 2006 - 2:49pm

Yep, I'll be there. I mean, it's Vegas, baby!

October 11, 2006 - 3:17pm

I go to Vega every year to gamble. One time I put 10 cents in a penny machine their and out came $60,000!!!

Have fun.
(P.S. I also lost "alot" of money in Vegus)
Aaron: Vegas is only a cheap city if you don't lose all your money gambling there.

Best of luck.

October 11, 2006 - 3:38pm

I will be there!

October 11, 2006 - 5:27pm

Hey Aaron, can I get on the "people who will buy Aaron a drink" list?

Looking forward to the event - my first time going. Any ideas on how to get invited to the sweet afterparties?

If anyone is looking for flights, check out,, and

October 11, 2006 - 5:32pm

I am actually looking at going to the PubCon. If the boss signs off on it.

It will be my first and i am looking to meet up and talk to all of you.

October 11, 2006 - 6:13pm

I'll be there. First time to Vegas. ...Shame I have to be back to work on Friday. :(

October 11, 2006 - 6:55pm

Love PubCon, hate Vegas, won't be there...

October 11, 2006 - 7:56pm

I will be in Vegas this year. I haven't been able to make it in the past. Just call me a PubCon virgin.

October 11, 2006 - 8:19pm

Damn it all, I'm going to be in England for 18 days training with Ammon Johns. Not that it won't be valuable, but c'mon, it's Vegas for crying out loud!

I guess I'll have to wait until Chicago to buy you a rum and Coke and a water :)

October 11, 2006 - 8:20pm

I'll be there too, with Rand and Jane Copland from SEOmoz as well. Really looking forward too it, since last time I met a bunch fo SEO folks it was at our open house just a few days after I was hired....

October 11, 2006 - 8:35pm

I'll be there also.

It would be interesting to compare the SES show I was at in NYC to the PubCon.

My picture is on my blog. If you recognize me in Vegas .... feel free to say hello.

October 12, 2006 - 3:05am

Any shows coming to miami anytime soon?

October 12, 2006 - 3:47am

Hi Jared
I know SES had one (roughly 8 months ago I think), but it was focused on the hispanic market, and I am not sure if they are going to hold it every year. If Danny Sullivan leaves that conference odds are many of the smaller shows may die off (and maybe the big ones too, depending on what Danny decides to do next).

October 12, 2006 - 5:31am

I will be there! Look forward to hearing your panel, and possibly meeting you!
