And We're Full!

When I launched the membership site about a year ago I decided to set a membership limit at 1,000. Recently we have been getting a lot of word of mouth marketing and our growth rate has surged beyond my wildest expectations. We recently raised our price to try to curb growth, but promotion associated with that caused another rush of sign ups and even after we raised our price we did not see any slowing down on new subscribers. We reached our capacity and are closing off new premium memberships for a while.

Ironic that success creates a host of other issues, but I care too much and work too long. And I don't want to lower the quality of our customer interaction and customer service to scale it to the moon. Recently I watched some TED videos about career crisis and motivation. One of the most ressonating quotes was Alain de Botton's "You can be successful at everything. We hear a lot of talk about work/life balance - nonsense. You can't have it all. So any vision of success has to admit what it is losing out on." It's so obvious to read that...but I certainly needed to hear it. ;)

In the worst recession in 80 years (perhaps a depression) I am not asking anyone to cry me a river for getting too much business. It is a problem most people would love to have. But we are drowning in opportunity with our other sites doing great and this site growing a bit quicker than I was planning on. Since opening I have made over 15,000 posts in the forums, and the rate of posting has only increased as our membership has risen. Just a couple months ago I was at ~ 12,000 posts.

As I have poured myself into this site we built a community I am proud of, but am falling behind on some other fronts - this week I was late writing a guest column for another site, I have 1,000+ emails in my inbox, and I have grown far too chubby (as seen in recent videos).

Our current customers will keep getting the same great customer service they have been, but I just turned off new paid submissions so I can lighten the load for a while. It is hard to justify letting my health slide to earn a bit more when so much of the earnings just get handed over to corrupt bankers. If I earn a lot but die young I can't really count that as getting ahead. Well I guess I could, but I don't want to. ;)

If you would like to be notified of when we have some capacity again please sign up for a free basic account (you get a bunch of cool bonuses) and I will let you know when we are open to new customers again!

Thanks for reading and thanks for your help in building this site into a strong well known brand with so many loyal customers! :)

Oh, and here are some last minute keyword tips!

And so you should be proud. Being part of the community has proved to be worth every cent. Congratulations on the milestone Aaron :)

August 27, 2009 - 11:29pm

Congrats, Aaron. Start counting those calories!

August 27, 2009 - 11:30pm

Congrats Aaron, that's Awesome! Well at least now I don't have to feel as guilty taking all of your free advice! :) I have to say, I am a little bummed though! How does that saying go? You snooze, you lose.....

August 28, 2009 - 12:00am

Congrats Aaron - I joined right when you were at 12,000 posts and I'm glad I snuck in just in time.

Cheers,
Dan

August 28, 2009 - 3:51am

You actually answered mine. I think the raise in price was fine. That was actually why I joined fast. I had been watching for a while. Now i contribute to the forums. a must for any new member!

August 28, 2009 - 10:25am

Congratulations Aaron. I can't say I'm surprised at your s uccess with this site. lol

August 28, 2009 - 1:29pm

Congrats Aaron, you definitely deserve the success you've worked so hard to achieve!

August 28, 2009 - 11:05pm

Aaron

As a fellow member of the #waytoofat club, maybe it is time to institute SEO bicycle meetups :)

Congrats on hitting 1K and I look forward to the next evolution.

Just as I was ready to purchase an online service, something I swore I would never do, this program is closed off to new members. *SIGH*

August 29, 2009 - 5:16am

Well you have a free member account, so if/when we open back up again we will be sure to mention it to you. I doubt we will be closed forever...we just have to figure out how to balance life and scaling our business interests. I was leaning far too heavily into business for the past 5 years or so.

August 28, 2009 - 11:55pm

Nothing better than seeing a marketer take their own medicine and succeed. A lot better indication of expertise and value than gross amounts of narcissistic pontification found elsewhere. :)

August 29, 2009 - 12:41am

Hey Aaron,

Your service and knowledge about SEO is INSANE!

Its awesome and I think people who missed out not being part of your forum are REALLY MISSING OUT.

I'm so lucky you let me in and offer me real advice.

My advice to you my friend is don't work too hard - health is also important - keep fit for your lady if you need anymore motivation - cheers :) -

See you in the 'Community' :)

August 29, 2009 - 5:14am

Thanks for the kind and encouraging comments everyone!

August 29, 2009 - 7:25am

I have followed you on here for years and learned have so much from you, and I'm happy you have had such great success with this site! I hope you will keep posting on this blog?

Do some running for exercise and you'll be surprised what it does for the mind, not just the body.

August 29, 2009 - 5:55pm

Aaron,

First things first. Congratulations!!!
You have become a source of inspiration for many of us.
It's incredible what people can achieve with hard work and inspiration.
But be careful my friend, IMHO, success is not a valid synonym of happiness. Focus on your health, (I'm doing it with mine trying to lose weight also).

Keep doing this amazing work!

Ariel Di Stefano.

August 30, 2009 - 4:55pm

Your service is A+ and your success with this site is no surprise to myself and many others.

August 31, 2009 - 3:51pm

Hi Aaron,

Congrats on the membership overload you deserve the success as you have worked so hard. I have followed your blog for a couple of years now and admire you for the information you share. In fact I'm an SEO consultant myself and its not easy. If you have lots of work you need put in the hours and if you don’t have the work you still need to put in the hours. Still if you start putting on weight you need to do what I do, go to the gym and clear your head, its really worked for me and I have more energy to deal with the long weeks. Look after yourself and well done.

Neil from Ireland :)

September 4, 2009 - 3:08am

This is disappointing. You should have something more prominent on your web page to tell people you are not accepting new subscribers before the visitor wastes a lot of time reading about all of the great stuff they CAN'T get. It reminds me of the gold dealers in Saudi who said everything was free tomorrow.

September 4, 2009 - 7:56am

Sorry about that...but I figure it is better to have people read the copy and know what they are missing out on (such that they are ready to join when we do open again) rather than warning them off before they know what they are missing out on.

September 7, 2009 - 6:26am

Congrats on the success of your forum.

Look forward to more spots becoming open.

Reminds me of lining up for Springsteen tickets.

I'll be the guy camped out at the front of the line outside the ticket window... :^)

Best wishes

Steve

September 7, 2009 - 1:47pm

We will at some point Steve :D

September 7, 2009 - 7:32pm

Aaron,

I have my credit card ready, so please email me as soon as there is an opening.

September 8, 2009 - 4:21am

We will send you an email when we open back up. :)

September 8, 2009 - 11:01am

Please let me know too...

September 8, 2009 - 1:13pm

I have used many of your free tools to help build my e-com site and they have worked great. I was very excited to join...but have been to busy to work on the site. I wish I would have taken the time to join sooner! Oh well, let me know when you will have me:) Thanks Aaron!

September 8, 2009 - 4:41pm

We will email you once capacity opens up pompileo & Gersh-Grosberg. I look forward to seeing you 2 join us :)

September 8, 2009 - 7:21pm

Who was about to join before you closed off! Keep us posted, I will defiantly be getting in as soon as the doors opens again. Good luck with everything until then, hopefully its sooner rather then later.

September 8, 2009 - 8:47pm

Will do DDistel! :)

September 8, 2009 - 9:19pm

The fact that you've closed the door and not compromised on your quality is great!

Unfortunately breaking the arms of my superiors to agree to sign up $$, has left me with a bit of an empty pit in my stomach, that I missed the boat.

For those of us standing outside the gate. This reminds me of the cheezy Sean Connery movie called ZARDOZ (Look it up in IMBD..you whipper snappers). Where the poor people stare at the immortals behind a forcefield to the garden of eden.

Aaron if you ever missed the bank closing by 1 minute, or missed sitting on Santa's Lap or didn't join the lottery pool.
thats me.

September 9, 2009 - 8:47am

Aaron,

Anyway we can get access to all of your tools? I use rank checker frequently but wanted to try out Website Health Check.

This is one of the reasons I was ready with a cc to sign up but than read the news.

After seeing you present at SES in the SEO Tools section, I was excited to try these out. Anyway you can make these available?

September 9, 2009 - 7:06pm

They are available to paying subscribers, but we have not yet created separate tiers...so for now they are not available, but they should be in say 6 to 8 weeks.

September 9, 2009 - 4:35pm

I received you secrets to SEO and wanted to sign-up. Never thought I would be sold then not able to buy. You have a great service and pitch. Look forward to joining when space comes open.

September 9, 2009 - 7:04pm

This post was not made as a sales strategy but as a strategy to allow me to restore my health and to some degree sanity...I was working way too much and we were growing too fast. Once we re-open we should be able to better manage growth though!

September 9, 2009 - 9:45pm

Aaron, can you email me when your course is available again? I don't want to miss the boat a second time :) Thanks

September 9, 2009 - 9:59pm

We will :)

September 10, 2009 - 11:37am

Well done on the achivement Aaron and for staying true to your principles and more importantly remembering your health!

I've been reading your tips and really NEED to get into the community, so, I will also join the chorus of people bleating at you to email me when you have said spaces available!

Cheers

Matt

September 10, 2009 - 4:38pm

Will do Matt. thanks for the kind comment!

September 11, 2009 - 12:00am

First of all, congrats, Aaron. I really got my first true understanding of SEO from your SEO Book. I, like several others on this page, am kicking myself for not having signed up for the premium service earlier. Hopefully you will some openings soon or maybe create another tier of membership just for access to the training modules and/or tools. In any event, your success is well deserved and I hope you continue to grow your business!

September 11, 2009 - 6:29am

I like your idea of a multi-tiered system anishdshah...we might implement something like that soonish.

September 11, 2009 - 1:12am

Hi Aaron

First of all - Congrats! I have to say that your work is a nice breath of fresh air compared to other scam artists that I have seen around. I jsut missed your cutoff since I only found out about you really recently. So I was quite disappointed that there is no more space left for me :(

Anyway, I will be waiting for your EMAIL! Please do open up a few spaces as I think it will help many people avoid scam artists around the world.

Thanks for a great site! :)

Cheers

Jessie

September 11, 2009 - 6:29am

I will make sure you get an email when we open back up Jessie :)

September 11, 2009 - 5:52pm

I looked at this on the 27th, then came back on the 28th to sign up and it was gone. Who knew someone would actually stick to their word on the Internet. :)

As a long time SEOBOOK owner/user whatever, I've always enjoyed your style and delivery. I'll be sure to sign up next time I have the chance.

September 11, 2009 - 7:56pm

We will make sure to send you a message when we open back up brand1m. Have a great weekend!

September 11, 2009 - 9:06pm

>.<

I wanted to join tooo

Please bring it back :)

As others have suggested, I also would be interested at least in the training modules + seo tools

Hopefully you will offer something for us soon >.<

September 11, 2009 - 10:37pm

I will let you know when we do carlos!

September 15, 2009 - 1:41am

Hi Aaron
I am from little Australia.. Im over 9-5 and want to get involved ASAP.. hence i would appreciate you letting me know when the course is up again.. thanks mate

September 15, 2009 - 7:26am

Will do Wade!

September 15, 2009 - 8:47am

Hey Aaron,

Congrats on filling up to capacity. Do you have any rough estimates on when you'll be accepting sign-ups again?

September 15, 2009 - 10:41am

Hi ats...still somewhat uncertain, but maybe 6 to 8 weeks or so.

September 15, 2009 - 4:29pm

I hope you can pass the responsibility of the site to loyal moderators, or key members.

Apparently Obama has a postmaster who chooses out of 1000's of snail mail letters the ones he feels are important. (discounting the threats of course!) about 1000 or so get laid out on the table. Obama then personally chooses 10 or so and answers them directly, or makes it a point to bring those letters to committee meetings-so there is a human element, and has members read them out loud. I'm sure someone inside SEOBOOK could be your gatekeeper.

Waiting on the outside to sign in (Register). I have a little sticky with our credit card waiting to join. Hope its sooner.

September 15, 2009 - 8:07pm

Look forward to seeing you in the community searchengineman :)

September 17, 2009 - 5:51am

I was talking about the Secrets to SEO. I registered for an account and the daily emails where great. They really made you want to sign-up.

September 18, 2009 - 10:20pm

Please tell me that's an evil joke!!

How are we supposed to wait 6 to 8 weeks ? that's like a century on the internet.

I have heard really good things about Seobook, I don't want to wait 6 to 8 weeks to start my seo training >(

Why don't allow at least 100 more users or something like that ? I'm sure you would make plenty of people happy with that :)

September 19, 2009 - 9:24pm

Well the big issue is that I was working too much to the point my health was suffering. I need to develop sustainable health habits before increasing my workload again.

September 19, 2009 - 7:35pm

Keep me updated too Aaron :)

September 19, 2009 - 9:23pm

Will do :)

September 21, 2009 - 8:38am

Congrats Aaron!!!

In this world (and time) when everyone wants to make as much money as possible – you have actually closed an opportunity to make more money!!!

However I do feel its time you start doing some social service (in some poor countries – or may be start a foundation for poor people) --- (as you said) - instead of feeding your corrupt bankers.

September 21, 2009 - 8:44am

I have a website idea that would be fun, but I get so emotionally involved in those types of projects that it is best I don't start one until I get this site opened back up and operating smoothly even with me working on it slightly less than I was before I closed it ;)

I am sorta thinking that price increases will be one of the best strategies to curb demand a bit (while ensuring that paying customers still get the best service available in the industry).

September 21, 2009 - 12:22pm

Well done !

September 21, 2009 - 3:21pm

Hey Aaron,

I understand what it is like to open your emails each day to find your inbox with more emails then you can humanly answer.

There are still many people on this forum that seem to want your tools and training content enough to forgo the priverlage of contact support. Well possibly for at least as long as it will take to solve this issue.

Who knows, with the extra revenue you may be able to hire one of your better students to help?

Anyway please email me as soon as you are readu for your next round of openings.

Well done on your success.

Cheers

Danniel

September 21, 2009 - 3:25pm

Will do Danniel!
cheers

September 22, 2009 - 3:05pm

Im still here with my credit card in hand.

Mark.

September 23, 2009 - 12:11pm

It should be a few weeks to about a month or so Mark :)

September 22, 2009 - 9:15pm

Oh, man! I was going to sign up last month and got w-a-a-a-y too busy. (Sound familiar)

So now I will check in daily to see when the gates re-open.

Tip: I walk an hour a day early in the morning and it helps with the stress.

Best regards,

David

September 23, 2009 - 12:11pm

Hi David
It will likely be at least a few weeks or so from now before we open up again (I have 2 conferences in early October and would not want to open up until after them...though it might be a few weeks after that which we open).

September 23, 2009 - 12:51pm

Im amazed with all you have going on that you actually post responses to individual comments - impressive.

September 23, 2009 - 1:17pm

Well I have always been a service focused type of person. Where many marketers take as much money as they can, water stuff down, and (my favorite line) "work on their business rather than in their business" ... I prefer a different approach... one based on selling something I would gladly pay for and something I would value as a customer.

To ensure that value is there direct interaction is a big piece of that strategy. The direct feedback helps me offer something worth buying and sets us apart from businesses primarily focused on scale rather than their customers.

September 24, 2009 - 7:39pm

Hi Aaron,

I am very impressed with everything I have seen on you site. Very inspiring. Please keep me informed as soon as you open up registration again, even if it is for a new type of membership where we would not have the right to post questions on the forum, therefore reducing the workload for you. Maybe you could also pay some of your best clients to provide service on the forum, therefore increasing the number of people who can benefit from your work.

Eric :-)

September 24, 2009 - 8:38pm

Will do Eric. And both of your ideas sound like good ones...ideas we have been thinking about doing :D

September 24, 2009 - 11:04pm

Hi Aaron,

I was just referred to join your site by a friend and colleague who's a member. Unfortunately, I missed the boat on the deadline. Looking forward to signing up and understand it might be another good month. I have a site that I've been plugging away at for 18 months which is hung up in rankings and I was very much looking forward to your input.

With regards to your health, you're spot on in surmising that there's no point to leaving a good looking young corpse. I schedule a walk or run for 30 minutes everyday and find that the energy (kinetic?) I get back from doing it easily justifies the time not to mention the health benefits. It's good to keep perspective.

Many Thanks

George

September 25, 2009 - 7:28pm

Thanks for the encouragement George. I will let you know when we open back up. :)

September 25, 2009 - 11:53am

Any chance of making some info on approximate wait times known? Or start a reserved list (i.e pay $X to get a place in a queue that will guarantee you membership once there is a space)?

I'd bookmarked your site six months ago, planning on getting signed up when I was ready to start SEO'ing a couple of new sites properly.

Checking back, I found out you were full :(

September 25, 2009 - 7:24pm

We won't open before I get back from New York (~ 2 weeks from now). As far as when we open after that, it depends on a lot of factors like my health, how caught up I am on email and other projects, etc.

When we open back up, access to the site will likely run $300/month.

September 29, 2009 - 6:07am

I've really gained from reading your blog and introductory course and would definately join if I could now. The free tools are great!

Keep up the good work and let us know when you decide to let some additional members join.

Alastair ;)

September 29, 2009 - 2:36pm

I will let you know when we open Alastair. Glad you liked everything so far! :)

October 2, 2009 - 10:36am

I was a paid member in the past, over a year ago, for a couple months. I want back in Aaron! Open those doors.

October 2, 2009 - 11:00am

We will soon rdurty2...likely before the month is out :)

October 4, 2009 - 11:29am

As an owner of a small design and marketing firm, my business has just began to gain some momentum again, after a very stagnit 2 quarters. 2009, has just been awful as most can contest to. But, you get what you put in, and my clients are in more demand of seo as each business is trying to get the most out of all their marketing efforts.

I find myself coming to this site more and more as my knowledge and experience grows. I would just like to thank, all that has contributed to this extremely informative site.

I am one more, who is very interested in subscribing, and too would also like to be notified once memberships are open again.

regards

October 4, 2009 - 5:36pm

Thanks for the kind comment, and we will be sure to let you know when we open up BluSol :)

October 4, 2009 - 10:57pm

Hi Aaron,

I really enjoyed and benefited from your service before but had to stop for while. I am ready and really need some more advice so send me that email when letting me know when I can sign back up!

Thanks,

I will Brian

October 6, 2009 - 11:39am

To your list of those wanting in. You do inspire so many with your integrity and honesty. I have like a million questions for you, but I'll settle for access to your modules. :-) SEO is changing so fast...a community approach is awesome. Thanks. Hope your health is better...you can do it!

Will let you know when we open Scott!

October 5, 2009 - 12:16pm

Hi, Aaron

If all that is keeping you from letting more customers in is a limit on your personal time and resources, why not just let us in without having access to commenting?

That way we could read past posts and have access to tools without taking up any of your time. Simply turn off the ability to comment. Then, it would be "here's my money" without any work on your part. Possible?

Sending much positive and reinforcing energy your way!

Hugs,

Kelly

October 5, 2009 - 8:41pm

Hi Kelly
when we re-open we will likely offer multiple tiers. I don't want to do a partial reopening because I still have to think through conversion flow paths, copywriting, etc. Its not easy to be semi-open. But we should have something before the month is out.

October 8, 2009 - 4:26pm

I really enjoyed and benefited from your service before but had to stop for while. I am ready and really need some more advice so send me that email when letting me know when I can sign back up!

I wish can meet you in person.

October 13, 2009 - 10:31pm

Does anyone know of any Comparable services out there?

October 13, 2009 - 10:40pm

Frankly I don't think anything comes close to our member forums on quality. As far as just tools + information goes (without that level of in depth interactivity) you might want to try planet ocean or seomoz.

October 14, 2009 - 8:57pm

I've become plenty cynical towards "gurus" who are claiming they have the answer to my online marketing woes. So much of what you hear has been rehashed so many times it reminds me of a late night TV infomercial.

But yours is a breath of fresh air, Mr. Wall, and I would certainly be interested in a premium membership when some slots open up. Keep me posted, will ya?

October 14, 2009 - 10:31pm

Thanks for the kind comment monkeymeat. I will let you know when we are open again. :)

October 15, 2009 - 8:38pm

I too, am very interested in the premium membership. Do you have any update on an estimated time?
Thanks

October 15, 2009 - 9:27pm

Hi Ymarks
We will likely be open in 2 to 3 weeks or so.

October 16, 2009 - 3:37pm

Hey Aaron,

I guess it's my own fault, but I just pleaded for 2 weeks(the 1st 2 weeks on the job) and diagrammed the benefits of Seobook as to convince my new company to pay for my membership and cancel our other ones.

Finally succeeded, and your closed! Ouch! If you could let me know when you open, I would greatly appreciate it!

thanks for your great service to our community! Can't wait to get involved in the forums!

October 16, 2009 - 5:42pm

I will let you know when we open back up smlt2685. Have a great weekend!

October 16, 2009 - 10:49pm

Me too! credit card in hand!
Have a great weekend!

October 17, 2009 - 7:02pm

Will let you know when we are open mamatech. You have a great weekend as well :)

October 19, 2009 - 3:10pm

Sup Sensei,

congrats on 1k :)

I am finally running a campaign for myself and generating business leads through PPC, so I figure I've graduated from nub, so semi-nub :p

Anyway, I'm looking to try further my skills again, please hit me up when you have space.

cheers

October 19, 2009 - 11:02pm

Congrats on the recent career growth jackmo :) I will let you know when we open back up.

October 20, 2009 - 12:17am

Hey Aaron,

Long time book owner and follower, first time poster :D I'm fairly sure that your book was one of our first pieces of SEO training all those years ago!

In any case, if there is still space, I'd like to get on that email list please for when you feel ready to give out some more space for the premium membership (even if it's only for the training modules).

I can empathise with you about the problem with work taking over your life! I hope you find the balance you're looking for ;)

On a personal note, I found Dan Sullivan's ideas on balancing the entrepreneurial lifestyle interesting and useful. Let me know if you want more info on his stuff and I'll point you in some specific directions.

Cheers!

October 20, 2009 - 4:13am

I will let you know when we re-open MissingC.

October 20, 2009 - 7:02am

Yo Aaron,

have you ever considered a 'read only' subscription to the forums? So people could still gain the benefit from the forums, training modules and expertise but not increase your work load due to being unable to post?

Just an idea and I don't know if there would be customer service nightmares or if it would be more trouble then it's worth, but from a customer perspective I think people would be willing to pay - I certainly would - for the benefit of being able to read the forums/premium content, even if you couldn't post, whilst waiting for full membership to be available again.

October 20, 2009 - 11:04am

We have thought of that idea but we still would not want to open up to members until we are ready to take full members as well because part of the issue is account management ... like permissions issues, lost passwords, forgotten usernames, refund requests (if a person cancels in the middle of month x), payments that didn't go through (people forget to update credit cards, credit cards get stolen, etc.) still consume time...so we don't want to open up until we have enough time to take care of more customers. Even the seemingly hands off "read only" type account still require significant effort on our end.

October 20, 2009 - 10:16pm

Hello Aaron,

I'm very interested in joining because I want the best advice for my websites, and I entered a project with a website possibly in the sandbox. Before doing a reconsideration request to Google, I'd really like checking everything up in order to make sure that it's all fully ok.
In the mean time, I'll be reviewing the free material (again)!

Thanks a lot for the good work :)
Antoine.

October 20, 2009 - 11:07pm

I will let you know when we open Antoine. Hopefully you get that client site ranking quickly :)

October 21, 2009 - 3:15pm

What do you think about a waiting list for when you open the gates again?

October 21, 2009 - 7:17pm

Hi Andy
when we open we will likely email everyone who has since signed up to the site. People who commented on this thread might get an email a couple days earlier :)

October 21, 2009 - 7:46pm

I paused on August 26th and didn't register, I figured I could do it later. I've been checking the site daily since then. Please add me to your list.

October 21, 2009 - 7:47pm

I will let you know when we open up jafabel...should be fairly soon :)

October 22, 2009 - 9:45pm

October 23, 2009 - 2:13pm

Hi,

I've been having good look around this site after only stumbling across it recently and am really impressed!
The SEO for firefox tool has been really useful alone.
Could you please let me know when a slot becomes available?
Thanks!

Alex

October 24, 2009 - 3:26am

Hi Alex
I will let you know when we open!

Have a great weekend.
Cheers,
Aaron

October 23, 2009 - 5:31pm

Just found you guys last month - new to SEO - I signed up for the free stuff, and I keep getting the compelling emails to subscribe. I'd love to subscribe/pay/participate, and every day I attempt to access the subscription page...awaiting your return. Hopy you get it figured out soon, have tons of fun, and rest up for another round! Anxious to utilize the "other" tools available for subscribers.
Is there any way to get to those tools - pay - whatever now instead of wait for all the other stuff to come back online?
Hub Finder
Local Rank
Duplicate Content
Health Check
Comp research??

I need these tools now if there is anyway to simply purchase them?!?!
Thanks

Rob.

October 24, 2009 - 3:23am

Hi Rob
It is not easy for me to create a separate sales funnel for the other stuff just yet...but we are likely less than 10 days away from opening.

Have a great weekend!
Cheers,
Aaron

October 24, 2009 - 3:30am

Hi Aaron,

Can't wait to be a member :) I'm hoping you'll allow new subscriptions soon. Have a great weekend!

October 25, 2009 - 7:44pm

Hi Aaron.
We are ready for the next opening and hoping that you accept not only paypal, click bank is another good option and of course direct payments via debit card.
Saludos.
CirusP

October 25, 2009 - 8:24pm

Hi Cirus. I will let you know when we open, but from my perspective ClickBank is a horrible option for anyone selling a premium internet marketing service. Why? Because most the people who typically shop through ClickBank are dreamers looking to buy a dream and asking for a refund after it turns out they have to do any real work. Since I don't sell a dream and a bag of smoke I don't seem to fit well with those customers.

Clickbank is only a good option if you are either

  • operating outside the internet marketing space, OR
  • selling a bag of smoke, OR
  • offering software which you can revoke the rights on if a refund request is made

When I did offer Clickbank and Paypal at the same time (back when I primarily sold an ebook) the refund request rate from ClickBank users was over 5X as large as what it was from our Paypal paying customers.

Some of those wankers using Clickbank sent me refund request emails that were delivered into my inbox within less than 3 minutes after their purchase. How do they even finish downloading the files, let alone writing a refund request email and sending it in less than 3 minutes? Those people proved their sole goal was to steal my stuff. That customer segment is absolutely worthless (or perhaps of negative worth) ... at least to me.

October 27, 2009 - 1:05am

I was looking for a seo training with someone else and they not only recommend you but also convinced me to get into your program. Now after spending so much time on your website. I found out that your doors are close. I read your comment and you justified your trick. But when i go to shop something and they say they have and at the last time they tell me-- Oh we are out of stock and we will let you know as soon as we have it, for me this is negative marketing and trying to selling me something , which dont exist. You should put a banner on you home or training page rather than asking us to read all the stuff. Not only this when I subscribe to basic plan, you sent me a link to upgrade my subscribtion and againt showing me the same stuff "And We are Full". This is how your teach also? get the people on your website and dont sell what you offer. For me this is spam b/c thats what spammers do. I read your book, you have a good knowledge about SEO but today i am little disappointed about this. As i am getting so many emails and ads like this; where they offer something else and then sell something else. In your case your sold me your website content and i wasted my 2 hours. If one is hungry then he needs something to eat, you cannot live describing the importance of food and how good cook you are. You can disagree with me.. thanks and takecare

October 27, 2009 - 6:57pm

Sorry for wasting your time AsimK. I promise we will open soon and we will let you know when we are open again.

October 27, 2009 - 7:43am

In reply to your comment Asmik, I think you're right in one sense, that a banner or notification on the main site saying 'Sorry We're Full - Check Back Later' would be good. But if you read the post and see what Aaron says, you'll see that this isn't spam/dirty tactics.
Even if it were a clever marketing strategy that makes the product appear scarce and therefore more desirable, note that Aaron has personally answered the majority of comments on this thread.
Also, I think you said that you were willing to buy before you arrived at the page - what then is the point of doing any 'dirty tactics'?
Personally I believe what's being said, in that the business has grown too fast and they're not willing to sacrifice quality for more money.

October 27, 2009 - 6:21pm

Yeah...I was simply unable to keep up and needed time to get myself in order. If I take on work to the point that either the quality goes to crap and/or I have a physical or mental breakdown I don't think that helps anyone out (other than our competitors I guess).

Sorry I wasted some of your time AsimK, but when we do open you will be one of the first to know. And at the same time if I put a "go away" sign on the front page then I scare off potential new customers before they even get into the conversion flow at all, or know what we offer...I could make it sound like we are not even interested in new customers - EVER.

Believe it or not, the day I decided that I was being overworked and we were close to full was the same day I decided to close the site and the same day I published the above post. Was it the 100% perfect solution? No. But every additional step I take to perfect the site being closed takes it that much further from being ready to be open. I would rather have opening the site up being a 10 minute process than something that takes me so long that I keep putting it off.

October 27, 2009 - 11:03pm

Thanks alot for replying me back-- Now this make difference in spam and good marketing. I read all of your comments and good to know that you reply to comments yourself. I also run a business, sometimes customer give us feedback, which makes us know their need in better way. And personally i want those who points out my mistakes, in this way i can correct my self. Anyways I will waiting for the email as you promised that i will be the first one to know and as soon as i hear something i will get myself registered. Again thanks for the replying from both of you guys and have a blessed day.

October 28, 2009 - 3:14pm

If you are stumbling on this post and wondering if Aaron is full of crap (pulling a stunt to increase membership), you might want to review this blog again. Look at how often Aaron comments directly - now multiply that by almost every thread in the Forum. I have no idea how he has time to do it, but he does...consistently.
I have been a paying member for a year, and I will be a paying member as long as the quality of the Forum, the interaction with other SEOs and the general information offered remains as high as it is. This is by far one of the best resources you will ever find on building sites and SEO. I spend time every day in the Forum - and I can't say that about any other site except Google.
I am sure Aaron is not always 100% forthcoming about all of his marketing ideas - that would be pretty silly. But look at the blog, and look at what he discusses in the posts and the comments. There is a common denominator of honesty and integrity through it all, and this is not affected - it would be obvious if it were. If you don't think Aaron is willing to help you to learn how to help yourself, you are not reading the same things I do.

And if you think you are seeing a web marketing guy pull a web marketing stunt to get more sign-ups, look deeper. You're missing it completely.

So here I am, scurrying to join the queue of early invitees! Count me in Aaron.

In terms of joining the forum, I wonder how different seoblog forum questions/answers is to seochat? (which is free). Because the seobook forum is largely a "black box" - I can't see it to evaluate it other than a few headline thread titles on the seobook sales page.

The way I see it, there's two types of information: general and specific. General information is like advice on your on-page optimization, and opinions on why you might not be ranking now. This isn't information that you have to dig deep for (e.g. you can ask these questions on dozens of forums out there). But specific information, such as highlighting a particular "blog network" etc is valuable.

Do the seobook forum members exchange this kind of specific info, or is it general stuff like "I'm not ranking, why not? Please check out my site" (a la seochat)?

October 31, 2009 - 4:27pm

Andrew...think of who follows our blog and comments on the posts out here. Inside the forums tends to have an even higher signal to noise than our blog does...and our blog is WAY WAY WAY above the level of free public SEO forums...I would not have bothered creating a paid forum if I was going to be fine with it being similar to the free forums. The free public forums are dominated by the tragedy of the commons.

Here is some recent member feedback on the forums...

"Awesome information without much noise at all. A great resource center. "

"The forum *is* the USP"

"The answers are incredible. The knowledge shared is unique. The help provided is generous."

and, in spite of me making nearly 20,000 posts, members have learned so much from each other (even I learn a lot from other members...

"Aaron himself is great source of information, but in the forums you have tons of other people participating, answering questions, and even writing their own articles. I learn almost as much (or more - sorry!!!) from them as I do from Aaron's articles."

and here is another comment that captures the community-like nature of our community (and community fits better than forum, IMHO)

"I can't help but feel that I'm part of a very special group of people. It gives you a great sense of security that there are so many others steeped in seo and related areas available so openly.

I have taken on additional projects that perhaps I wouldn't have before and I find that by following the different threads I am becoming more open to the different options available to enhance my income.

I am in total awe of some of the members who have built up sites then sold them for a huge profit: I would love to do the same!"

October 31, 2009 - 5:26pm

There is nothing new about people wanting "what they can't have". As a matter of fact, it's one of the infamous ploys of Internet Marketers. Always build up the "wanting" and let them grovel like dogs. I have a a major e-commerce site for high end collectors. You would be amazed at how many requests I get for SOLD OUT items.

November 1, 2009 - 9:42am

November 2, 2009 - 3:34pm

Thank you for the advanced notice, of the pending re-opening of SEO book.

Aaron if you have any drop dead examples of SEO book, which would convince certain
not so visionary bosses, to justify the new price range
.. I would be in your debt...and I would be your client!

I have a feeling that there are many of us who are going to have to manoeuvre around
HIPPO’s (Avinash Kaushik-Look it Up), tight fisted accountants & old fashioned run of the mill jerks.

This is not a case of only bringing the “Mountain to Muhammed”. But pouring molten lava into
the empty brain cavities with a light sprinkling of “Shock & Awe”. My boss may think this is a bit strongly worded.
but unfortunately my swear & cussing filter will not let me truly express myself.

Keep up the fantastic work

November 2, 2009 - 8:03pm

Easiest way to understand the value of cutting edge SEO advice?

People spend $20,000,000,000+ / year advertising with Google. Effective SEO allows you to capture your share of that audience while avoiding your share of that expense.

And once you have implemented SEO the recurring costs are ***much*** smaller than that of an AdWords customer.

$10 a day (what amounts to a few AdWords ad clicks for many businesses) is nothing to have a lawayer on retainer, and right now having one of the world's top SEOs on retainer will help you build revenues far faster than most lawyers would.

November 2, 2009 - 8:17am

Aaron,

Following the comments it looks like you've started sending invitation emails. I haven't however received any since the weekend just gone by.

If you have already sent the email, it is likely that I've missed it somehow. Would you please re-send an email!

Thank you.

Partha Bhattacharya

November 2, 2009 - 9:17am

Hi Partha
I think I just sent you an email, but will send it again to make sure :D

November 2, 2009 - 1:14pm

I was so excited about signing up again but doubling the price!? Well now it's just completely unaffordable and I'm sure it will be for many people.

November 2, 2009 - 7:55pm

It is not for everyone. Our membership caliber is high and we wanted to keep it that way. The interactivity on our site ***is*** worth far more than most other membership sites because most membership sites are a pack of static guides and a few tools, whereas having a membership in our forums is like buying a consultant on retainer for $10 a day. Its quite cheap if you are good at business or SEO. I mean most businesses spend WAY MORE THAN THAT on stuff that has way less incremental value.

November 2, 2009 - 1:32pm

Would it be possible that you send me a invitational email and let me join?

$300/month is a deal breaker for me. Im a full time designer/developer looking to transition into the SEO world but without an existing client base I simply cant manage the overhead of 300/month. Maybe you could consider breaking your membership level into tiers and re-offer a 100 subscription that allows access to the content but no posting to the forums, or something along those lines. Im looking for something i can use to teach myself and learn from the pros, i dont necessarily need to interact with them. the 300 sub cost could be for the more successful guys that can afford it and want the additional benefits. just a thought. unfortunately, as a rookie trying to gain the knowledge to get those first clients, 300 prices me and others in my position out of the market.

I commend your success and wish you all the best.

November 2, 2009 - 7:53pm

We were thinking of doing something like that. The only reason we had not launched that type of service yet was that it would have forced us to need to rewrite all the sales copy in a way that had 2 different offerings...which would have slowed our pre-opening.

November 2, 2009 - 5:34pm

Just sent you your invite cambie. :)

November 4, 2009 - 12:37am

Thanks Aaron for the invite... $300/month is a bit too steep for me too, since I am just starting out-- I could swear i saw it for $150 recently... However, I should be able to get someone else to finance this, since regardless of the price, I've read only good things about seobook.com.

November 4, 2009 - 5:54pm

Before the year is out we are hoping to have a second pricing tier that is lower...we are still working through lots of stuff with the back end technology though.

November 4, 2009 - 1:33pm

Aaron you always seem quick to jump on the whole crappy economy for one reason to double prices. From my calculations the income from this site (even at the old, reasonable price) you are making bank each money. This doesn't even take into consideration the, probably, insane amounts of income you make not from this site. So I don't think the economy is hurting you all that much.

For those of us who may be intermediate SEO's this used to be an affordable amazing resource. We have the basics and then some down, but get stuck on some execution practices and don't really have a top authority site to turn to for help.

Now $300 is great and all for people who have business's who can pay that for them but for us little guys trying to do this on our own...

it's next to impossible IN THIS ECONOMY. You have now completely priced out the little guy who wants to join in hopes of being able to take their knowledge to the next level in order to get to a point that they can start taking on clients. Well for lots of these people, myself included, it was heartbreaking to see the cost of monthly admission DOUBLE. Most of us don't make hundreds of thousands of dollars a month from a website. Hell most don't make that in a year.

It's akin to dangling a cookie in front of our faces and then just as we are about to take a bite you yank the cookie away. You showed us the $150 price tag and then built up the excitement for lots of us that it's going to reopen and then BAM $300.

I was a member for a few months back when the price was only $90/month!!! Yes $90, can you believe that!!?? But at that time I couldn't afford to pay that per month for an extended period, as much as I would have loved to. Now I'm in the same boat. I could have afforded the $150 albeit it would still be a stretch, but now that cookie is long gone, never again to be seen, as trying to afford $300 IN THIS ECONOMY with all my other bills just can't happen.

My 2 cents, even though it's not worth much here.

November 4, 2009 - 5:53pm

Sorry to hear that rdurty2. My life and health have value and I spend far too much on this site. I didn't raise prices only to try to make more money...but largely to help limit demand and further increase customer quality.

And to have direct access to me + hundreds of leading SEOs for $10 a day is cheap. If you don't think that is cheap then either you have not hired a lawyer, are lacking in resourcefulness, don't realize how hard I work, and/or are not thinking about how people spend over $20,000,000,000 per year advertising on Google.

Lets be honest... even at $300 I am still only charging crumbs for the value delivered (if people are willing to follow through with the advice given - which our current customers are doing).

I don't bitch about the economy being bad. I bitch about bankers and the government partnering to steal trillions of Dollars to spend upon one another lavishly and without merit.

Our price was never set @ $90 a month...it was $100 a month right after launch...then we got so much demand that I lifted it to $150...and then when demand didn't slow down I decided to close for a few months to help me catch up with it and limit membership a bit. We decided that the price needed increased again or we were going to run into the same problem again of me working 20 hours a day.

Success is largely driven by being resourceful. Lines like "IN THIS ECONOMY" run counter to that. :(

We should have a lower priced tier out before the year is out which gives full access to everything except for starting new threads and asking questions in the forums.

Invite sent Brett. :)

November 5, 2009 - 3:03pm

I was definitely interested in $150/month. But $300 is not an option.

Yes it does look like a really good membership site but it's certainly not a solution that will make me cancel all the other (some obviously also good) membership sites. I can certainly add a $150/month site, but that was the limit.

I do understand your business decision and hope that you will run some sort of promotion in the future to make it affordable for some of us.

November 6, 2009 - 6:35am

The thing is...it would take me less than a day to put up a site that makes an incremental $300 a month for years. So if people look at SEO from that perspective it is sorta hard to see how $300 is outside of budget, unless people are arbitrarily capping themselves.

To rainmaker: I am like you and cannot afford the $300 a month. I actually subscribed without realizing the price. But for the few days that I have checked it out, the price of $300 is worth it. There is no good SEO forum right now. DP, SP, V7N, WW, whatever, the SEO forums are either dead or have an insane amount of misinformation. SEOBook's forum on the other hand is great! So yeah of course all the other information is awesome too but unlike those that won't be changing too much, the forum is active and Aaron is extremely active in it.

I know I sound like a shill but I'm not...heck I won't even be part of SEObook anymore since I can't afford it. Mainly though I'm jealous at all the people that got in at $100 or $150!

Thanks for all the free data so far, it's been a great help!

I would like to sign up to the premium membership if at all possible,

Yours Humbly
