Search and Destroy

Dec 16th

Time recently came out with a new article called Search And Destroy which I did not enjoy.

In my eyes it was apparent the writers knew nothing about search. Listed are a couple quotes which show what I am talking about.

"Should they be allowed to push the websites of their own businesses to the top of the stack? Could a search engine suppress the website of a political party with which its CEO disagreed?"

If it was know that this was happening people would quit using the search engine. Politics are frequently fed by greedy companies who can afford to waste money anyway...as noted on this very site yesterday. The largest drug companies have already started to control ads anyway.

"But when the competition gets stiff and Page has to answer to his shareholders, integrity may be a luxury Google can no longer afford."

I certainly think it will be hard to balance, but there is no way that going public will imediately cause them to loose all of their business ideals which made them a success.

More on the Google Florida Update

Another interesting article by Gord Hotchkiss.

I think his articles, the one from Barry Loyyd, and Danny Sullivan's resource center are resting as the answer for what has happened.

Another couple good entries about the subject are done by Da' Tmeister and Andrew Goodman. Beyond those articles most of the activity has came from within the SEO forums. I must state that I have the utmost of respect for Danny Sullivan as he was one of the first people who linked into my article.

Most of the other people in the SEO field ignored the existence of my early article with the exception of the dubious website that had a generic article with an extremely similar name to my article...
Today many SEO websites still have dissatisfied customers and are now producing third rate rehash articles only citing a few of the above sources.

Pay Per Click Tips

Why you should know a little about Pay Per Click I tend to put things together in my head sometimes. I recently saw some anti Howard Dean marketing attempting to link him to Osama Bin Laden. I also saw that the first week of ads costed $230,000.

My curiosity was then sparked by the recent situation with Sadam. I looked and saw nobody was paying for "Sadam Captured" on Overture yet, and there was only 1 ad displayed for "Sadam Captured" on Google AdWords.

Those people wasting all that money on mass media could be buying ads at a way cheaper rate... (which leads me to believe they are funded by a rich special interest group).

Of the three ads on Google for the word "Saddam" one of them was for a penis patch. Surely some other companies could be profiting off of this search.

Many strong businesses can be designed around ideas in which the marketing is integrated with a product that can be produced on the fly. That is why I recommend that you should know at least a small amount about pay per click even if you outsource it. Here are some of my tips, and my favorite search engine marketing report.

Problems with AdWords

Dec 15th

Google is to be Sued for bogus trademark policies? Recently on the Always On network Peter Parmeson posted "Two weeks ago, Jan Mackenzie, a search-engine expert and president of The National SE-club approached us with interesting news about Googles’ Adwords Program. Up to date Mr. Mackenzie was able to collect more than 3000 complaints from Google advertisers which, according to the expert will soon result in a 30-million-claim against Google..."

In addition I would like to state my largest personal gripe with AdWords. Overture places exact match listings before broad match listings. Google does not do this, and thus
1.) the ad quality is deminished
2.) those seeking to promote niche products will have to financially compete with the deep pocketed big horses

LookSmart to shed staff

Dec 12th

LookSmart has lost most of its competitive advantages and is now loosing 2/3 of its revenue as MSN dumps them. They are aiming to cut costs to survive the storm...LookSmart flag at Half Staff

I suggest LookSmart does the unthinkable and change their business model one more time. Have ads be pay per click. Have the directory build free be their biggest asset, the Zeal community. Make commercial listings in the regular directory either free or low cost 1 time fee.

In doing this LookSmart would be able to provide relevancy and ads. Often times the two do not mix well when sold as a directory. Google, Yahoo, and most other major search engines (except meta search engines) are trying to keep ads seperate from listings. Either LookSmart, or everyone else in the search field is wrong...

Yahoo Directory is Worthless?

Dec 9th

SearchEngineWatch recently added a Florida Update section with tons of great information. A few weeks back Overture ads started to appear in the Yahoo directory. The problem is that the ads are frequently poorly targeted, and some of them get indexed by search engines.

A search for "Cleveland search engine optimization" shows a resulting listing page about Cleveland Zoos from the Yahoo directory with an ad for a Cleveland SEO firm.

For those who think that being in the AdSense program can boost your search results, this is a perfect example of why Google is using JavaScript to feed the sites (and thus prevent the ads from altering search results). Integration causes conspiracy theories and may well degrade results (as shown above.)
