Dumb News

Dec 30th

How credible is a news source that puts out press releases as if they are news. "Macon Area Online is now ranked # 5 at Yahoo and # 6 at Google under searches for Macon and is getting over 20,000 hits per day!" There are two things that are entirely wrong with this crap news.

1.) this crap message got syndicated all over the web through Moveover feeds
2.) on top of being a crappy PR article, Google powers Yahoo so them announcing different rankings is rather...um...stupid

later they continue with "If you are looking to take advantage of the fastest growing and most powerful marketing tool in the world, call us at 478-474-3482."

Now that statement is a bit unclear. Are we to assume Macon Online is this marketing tool? If this tool is Google, then why would we call Macon Online? Perhaps the author makes a fundamental attribution error and assumes we are as dumb as he is.

The Strugles of a Directory

Dec 30th

Here is another one of my articles. This one talks about the strugles that face directories today. Directories even as large in scale as the virtual library get rebuilt with newer and smaller sub directories.

My article also announces the launching of my new site Directory Archives .com

GoGuides Getting Ready

Dec 28th

GoGuides has turned on the free site submit option. While they are still working on rebuilding the directory technology they are accepting free submissions.

GoGuides is a somewhat selective directory, but it can't hurt to try to submit for free...On October 21st Skaffe split from GoGuides and both are now in a heated battle for editor and public support. It is in my estimation that both GoGuides and Skaffe will be excellent and highly responsive directories in the near term due to direct competition with one another.

Many think neither directory has the ability to survive on its own, but if they both have amazing customer service they will most likely wind up as two of the top half dozen directories on the web...Who says you can't win em all?

AdSense Ad Placement

Dec 27th

So I have a couple websites with AdSense ads on them. In the past I have just thrown the ads up there, and let the results kinda happen. This is rather foolish, so I decided while I only have a few sites with ads it would be a good idea to test different ad layouts and locations.

Some people think they should plaster the AdSense ads right at the begining of the screen. I honestly think there is no written rule that works on the entire web, but the ads should not be disruptive.

One of my websites is about an informational topic relating to psychology. Off the start I just threw the ads up there, and they probably were rather disruptive. I then moved them ... and moved them again. Right now I have them primarily placed at the end of the content on that website.

When I created that website the goal was to help and inform, not to make money. Now that the ads are at the end of the content I get to increase my permission asset with my readers before they buy clicking on an AdSense ad...I am certain I will do better at all goals.

Today has been one of my better click through rates since I joined the program... I suppose marketing just makes sense if I just accept common sense and feedback...Its worth it to use a little sense when thinking about where to place my AdSense.

Search at MSN vs Yahoo vs Google

Why must people who know absolutely nothing about search write articles about search engines? A recent Zacks article by Steve Harmon states "In my opinion Google has replaced Yahoo (YHOO already. More people use a search box than want to use a `directory` style hierarchy that Yahoo built."

Where has this guy been? Has he not seen Yahoo branding its search product? Their directory is more of a novelty now. When you go to Yahoo its Yahoo Search they are pushing, not the Yahoo directory.

Also has this guy failed to notice Yahoo gobbling up 3 of the 5 biggest crawler based search engines and the number one pay per click engine?

Google may be ahead, but it is certainly not because of Yahoo promoting its directory.

Later he asks "Remember Netscape?" - building a competitive search engine for the entire world knowledge database is most likely a tad bit harder than building a browser.

Then he states "Best bet is for Yahoo and Google to merge and take on Microsoft before Microsoft`s next version of Windows -- nicknamed Longhorn -- debuts with search and other features built in everywhere."

It does not matter if they make search accessible everywhere...it is the quality of the search the led people to Google. If nothing else, pushing MSN search on people will cause more negative press from people critical of MSN.

Free SEO Book

Dec 26th

So I finally wrote my SEO book that i was promising to give away on Christmas. Currently it is a 24 page HTML document you can view for a limited time by clicking here.

I also added a reference index in the last day...I may place it in PDF format...what do you think?

thanks

A MicroSoft Christmas

Just a reminder to those who do not have good Inktomi placement that MSN is to be dumping LookSmart in about a half a month (Jan 15). Some speculate that MSN may want to eventually shift to Ask Jeeves until it gets its technology in order.

I presume that MSN will stick with Inktomi until it builds its own technology. With Yahoo desiring to part ways with Google it is certain they will be investing heavily into making Inktomi a competitive product.

MSN will become competitve and remain so by the natural market forces of competition between Yahoo and Google... until it creates its own search product... You can check your Inktomi placement using Hotbot on its default setting, or by useing Pure Search provided by PositionTech.

Yet Another Google Theory

Dec 23rd

In the most recent issue of the Jimworld Gazette John Cokos states that he believes the recent Google algorithm shift may be due to the need to reinvent the algorithm wheel.

The PageRank patent is owned by Stanford. With that tie it may be hard for Google to go public without having to donate a large portion of future profits to the college. Some think Google is inventing an algorithm which replaces PageRank...With the recent changes this is rather plausible story, but only time will tell.

Free Keyword Suggestion Tools

Dec 23rd

Keyword research is typically done via the following tools:

Note: I later did a more in depth review of keyword research and keyword suggestion software.

recently Digital Point hacked together a free keyword research tool that uses both Overture and Wordtracker. This tool does a good job of showing the inaccuracies either tool alone may present. Here is their tool if you would like to try it...
