Neotonic Software is a San Francisco-based start-up which specializes in e-mail customer support. Google have also hired David Jeske, co-founder of Neotonic and the former director of engineering for eGroups (which now exists as Yahoo! Groups). source: SE Journal
Google bought them out last year, evidently there was not much fanfare about it. Originally Neotonic was used for the Google's ever increasing email load and they liked them so much, that they brought them in-house.
Google being Google, did not say too much about it at the time (until somebody asked). Then they verified it in April of 2003.
